the Navy Bonaparte today awarded
one-half of the armor plate contract
for the battleships South Carolina and
Michigan to the Midvale Steel Com
pany of Philadelphia. The secretary
awarded one-fourth of. the contract to
each of the so-called trust concerns,
namely, the Carnegie Steel and Beth
lehem Steel! Companies, at the bid of
the Midvale Company, of $346 a ton
for class "A” armor,
Mr. Bonaparte announced that later
he would Issue a statement -embodying
hts reasons for not giving the entire
contract to the Midvale Company,
which was the iowest bidder. The Mid
