L NEWS OF THE SECRET ORDER WORED Edited BvCEAl DE N'EALY MASONS OF CHATTOOGA HAP SPLENDID CONVENTION Public Exercises Were Held Thursday, at Which Prominent Members of the Order Made Speeches. The Masonic convention of Chattooga county was held on Wednesday and Thursday of this week at Summer ville, and was a pronounced success In every respect. A large number of Masons were present from all sections of the coun ty. The session of Wednesday was devoted largely to the transaction of business, many matters of Importance to the members of the order being con sidered. Public exercises were held Thursday In the county court house, the spacious building being crowded with Masons and their friends. An address nf wel come was delivered by Mayor Jesse Jolly, of Summem'lle, and the response was made by Judge John W. Maddox, mayor of Rome. Other speeches were made by Hon. B. F. Thurmond, of I.afayette, Grand Master Max Meyerhardt. of Home; Grand Junior Warden George M. Na pier, of Monroe, and Deputy Grand Master Thomas H. Jeffries, of Atlanta. The speeches were oil splendid ef forts and were received In hearty man ner by the Interested auditors. A hlg barbecue was served In the court house yard, which was one of the features of the occasion. Large numbers of ladles were present at the ’cue. Thursday afternoon, the third degree was conferred by grand lodge officers. Captain Cleghorn, one of the heat known men In that section, «*ig mar shal of the day, and handled the pro ceedings In excellent style. MACCABEES TO HAVE FINE BRASS BAND Member* of LaFayette Tent Form ing Band for Open-Air Con certs and Other Occasions. The members of Lafayette tent of the Maccabees are organising a Maccabec band. Several well-known musicians have already expreiaed their willingness to join, and at the laet review of this tent a committee, consisting of T. J. Miller, C. C. Head,.J. H. Head, J. J. Brown and H. H. Butler, was appointed to perfect arrangements looking to lta early organisation. The Maccabees have nearly 100 bands throughout this country and Canada, being especially strong In the Northwest, where almost every little hamlet that has a M&ccabee tent has a Maccabee band also. Tripp, deputy supreme organizer of the Bea vers of Atlanta, Ga., and J. W. Hall, special deputy organizer of Chattanoo go, Tenn., arrived In thla city a few days ago for the purpose of institut ing a dam of the popular Southern or der. and have met with more than satisfactory results during the past few days. These gentlemen have now an en rsHmant of more than 60 of Selma'i leading citizens, and a bright prospect to got over 160 more. Eu banks, and a first-class mimic and par ody singer, Mr. Bailey, of the Southern Saw Works, who between speeches came near breaking up the meeting by his fun-making abilities. President Williams presided and In troduced the speakers after he had ex plained the object of the meeting. The entertainment committee was: Bro. W. C. Bennett, chairman; Secre tary John E. White and Official Pho tographer A. K. Adklnson. They work ed early and late for the success of the entertainment, which so far exceeded their moat sanguine expectations that no doubt others' will be held by them In the near futi're. J. W. The district convention of the fifth Maeonlo district will be held In Mon* roe August 16. This district embraces the Masonic lodges of Atlanta and It Is expected that a large number of Masons will at tend from this city. Hon. Thomas H. Jeffries, of Atlanta, deputy grand master, la president of the convention, and R. R. Powler, of Covington, secretary. The committee on arrangemqpta, headed by Junior Grand Warden George M. Napier, of Monroe, Is pre paring an elaborate program for tha occasion. On Thursday evening, July 6, at the Cattle Halt, Kiser building, the semi annual meeting and public Installation of offleers of Empire Lodge No. 47, Knights of Pythias, was held before large gathering of members and their lady friends.
