’7**fMESS 'W ■!» THE ATLANTA GEORGIAN. baturday, jii.y 14. 13 “NOW” W HAT a world of power, what a wealth of meaning U contained In this simple monosyllable*. Into It are crowded all the golden re sults of that portion of our lives called history along ivlthtrue education gained often by those severe lessons conned In tears and bitter disappointment. Lock ed within its treasure store rest secure the realisation of the future’s eager anticipations. No word In all our Ian guage conveys to us so much, did we but properly realise It. The consum mation of the wondrous dreams of the prophet, the answer to the aspirations of the Idealist, the rebirth of long dead hopes, but. more than all else. It an. pounces to us the arrival of opportu nity- . . Like the patriarch's angel, hold Till It yield to thee Its blessing." Would that we might heed this splen did advice of the poet, and wrest from the rspldly fleeting present the bless ings actually won to us by all the ex periences of life- The chief cause for the failure of so ’ many lives to realize and appropriate all that the precious living present of fers with eager, outstretched hands. Is thnt so very many men nnd women are so completely absorbed and engrossed In the other (wo of the three sections Into which they have divided their lives In their thinking and In their imaginations. They live so persistent ly in the memories of the past that the present and Its possibilities holds but little value In their eyes. They build so gloriously In their Imaginations and their speculation the chambered castles of the future that the dependable foun dation stones of a future, unmarred by regret, lie pnhewn In the waiting quar ries of the present. Between the ■mournful walling for the tranemltted degenerqcy of long forgotten ancestors, nnd the gloomy contemplation of the future’s endless woe, but little time Is left for instruction In the profitable employment of that which la called to day. save the frequently reiterated command that It be spent In a feverish attempt to "flee from the wrath to' come.” Too long have men been taught that the present life Is an evil to be endured with at much fortitude as may he commanded. Instead of Its being a priceless blessing to be spent In the enjoyment of such genuine happiness as shall render arreptable gratitude for Its possession. There Is an. old tory Christians which reads-. “l’m a stranger here, heaven le my home.' It It a beautiful song, no doubt: speak Ing of high hope snd splendid trust, but I never hear It without thinking that those who sing It with surh unc tion might possibly And themselves not so far from home If they would only spend a little more time and thought In an attempt to realise In the place of their Impatient adjourn the beautiful dreams of the unseen and unknow homeland. At any rate, I think w would all be happier If a good many of these people would take out naturall satlon papers. Get rid of your regrets: life Ik made up of experiences, and all experiences are, therefore, valuable—the hard ones most of- all." This Is good advice, but may I be so bold as to say that I think this Ig still better: Lose your regrets In a constant effort to prevent their re We have something Infinitely better. We have today. 'Every day le a fresh beginning, every morn Is a world made new. Te who are weary of sorrow and sinning, here le a benqtlful thought for you.” It rained ell the afternoon yes terday,'perhaps. and the king of day sank to his rest covered by a somber pall of cloud. Well, what of It? His coming, today, was heralded by a mer ry crowd of golden-clad attendants, and the rosy Hush of a glad surprise o'erspread the heavens at nls approach, and now in triumph once more he makes his march across the sky. It Is today. Yesterday things went wrong all day, you say. one disappointment •»-I .in-'lhi-i v Ith 'I Mon i U mt": certainty, and the ev( weary and empty of hope. Yes, It was surely too bed, but—that was yester day, and It Is gone forever. tTot' here. It came stealing quietly our chamber while still In your day’s lack of'triumph. Today Is here.
