' A FEW ART NOTE8.
Jules Breton, who has just died, with
hie 79 years, spanned the whole cycle
of modern French art. When he be
gan his study In 1847, hie teachers were
men who had learned their trade with
David, remembered the work of Oreuse
whllo still alive, and had seen the be
ginning of French romanticism, which
was to transform modern art with a
new and vivid Interpretation of nature.
He early showed ability as an effective.
If not convincing, draughtsman, He
turned to landscape work under the
Influence of Corot—his first worl
ures In a revolutionary scene, and
Gleaners," In 1884 was one of the very
first of modern landscapes which put
the figure In Its proper relation to the
open air and the broad stretch of
fields. •
The Gleaners'' brought Breton a
medal and sale. Two years later his
‘Blessing the Wheat” was bought for
the Luxembourg, and all the honors of
a French artist came In due course.
Breton's pictures sold. One of them
brought In this country the htgh-water
mark of 845,000. His pictures appear
In almost every collection, but they
have never been sought by buyers who
see I hat at best Jules Breton remains
commonplace. The line which sepa.
rates sound workmanship from the
touch of genius he never passed,
his later years he turned to landscapes,
which shows how much Influence Corot
had over him, but critics think there le
not one of hie pictures great enough to
leave Its mark on the art of the day.
Carrlere's Studio hae Just been clean
ed out, after his death. Its contents
bringing 123,280. The pictures went for
email sums, 1500, 12,000, 82,500 and the
like. They were portraits and salon
K -lctures In Carrlere's lucid and catchy
tyle. The prices which they brought

rtere's pictures are held and sold.
Sorrolla Y. Bastlde will be remem
bered by many Americans for the sur
passing bit of technique shown In a
Picture— two or three women—one of
them a Sister of Charity, and a con
demned prisoner In a railroad car. He
has for twenty years been a Spanish
Talnter of whose work few examples
lave come to this country, but who had
an astonishing power to make the ob
server see the actual. He has Just been
exhibiting a collection of some 400
works In Paris, which has made the
Parisian “critic" "sit up and take no
tlce." It la one of the surprises In art
that a painter like Sorrolla hae been
little noticed by men who buy pictures.
If he had been, he would not have been
able to get four hundred of his paint
