At the Casino.
A most Interesting bill Is being pre
sented this week at the Casino at
Ponce DeLeon, and judging from the
reception given the various acts at the
performance, there Is reason to expect
a continuance of the fine patronage
during the balance of the week. No
one can complain of a lack of variety
In the performance. Marseilles, a con
tortionist of exceptional skill; the.Ju
piter brothers, with a mysterious cabi
net track; the three Cartmells, whose
dancing Is decidedly good; A. O. Dun
can. one of the best ventriloquists on
the Amerlcsn stage; the Cameragraph,
with new pictures, and Eddie Girard
and Jessie Gardner, In their one-act
comedetta, “Do<Wey and the Diamonds,"
a clever sketch—all these go. to make
up as enjoyable and pleasing a vaude
ville bill ss has been offered local the
atergoers this season.
The usual matinees will be given
during the week.
COUP IS WORKED
BY ADMINISTRATION
L LIFE
Members of Policy Holders’
Committee Chosen for
Trustees.
By Private leased Wire.
New York, July II.—There was con
sternation today In the camp of the
International policy-holders' commit
tee, caused by the coup of the Stan
dard Oil people, who announced that
W'llllam Rockefeller, II. II. Rogers and
others of the oil trust, would no longer
serve as trustees of the Mutual Life
Insurance Company, but that In their
stead had been nominated Judge Geo.
F. Gray, Benjamin F. Tracy, Alfred M.
Shook and Harlow N. Hlgtnbotham.
four of the most prominent members
of the policy-holders’ committee, which
Is seeking to oust the present manage
ment.
The audacity of this move may be
further appreciated when It Is known
that none of the opposing leaders who
tvas nominated wax consulted and
that, under the law, the nominations
are absolutely Irrevocable. If any of
the four decline to reverse their posi
tions, and refuse to join the crowd
they have been fighting, the Standard
Oil ticket will be blank so far ss their
places are concerped, and the opposi
tion will elect Its men by default.
The ticket which Mr. Rogers heartily
Indorses contslns the names of twelve
men who were not on ths McCurdy
board and twenty-four who were.
, The trustees nominated are: John
W. Auchlncloes, George F. Baker, Hu
go Baring, Charles 8. Brown, Dumont
Clarke. Frederic Cromwell, Cyrus Cur
tis, Jullsn T. Davies, Charlie D. Dick
ey, William P. Dixon, H. R. Duval,
George Gray, Charles R. Henderson,
H. N. Hlgfnbothsm, Jsunes N. Jarvis,
A. D. Jullllard, William H. Lambert.
Charles Lanier, Sir Hiram Stevens
Maxim, Emery McCIIntock, W. C. Mc
Millan, George P. Miller, Theodore
Moraford, Thomas M. Mulry, Charles
A. Peabody, Emile Oscar Philippi, Hen
ry Phipps, Alfred M. Shook, Leroy
Springs, George C. Rabd. Louis Stern,
Henry W. Taft, B. F. Tracy, W. H.
Truesdale, H. - McK. Twombley and
Cornelius Vanderbilt.
8hook Won’t Accept.
All have not accepted. In fact, one—
A. M. Shook, of Nashville, Tenn., It is
announced, will decline the nomination.
It Is stated that President Peabody will
not be a candidate to succeed himself.
It may be that If he Is nominated, he
can be. persuaded to accept.
- Mr. Peabody has made public a let
ter he has received from Henry Rog
ers, of the Standard OIL In which that
gentleman says he and William Rocke
feller, also of the Standard, had with
drawn from further connection with
the Mutual because of unjust criti
cism. Mr. Rogers denied that he had
anything to do with the election of
Mr. Peabody as president. He also de
nied that the Standard had ever trans
acted hny business with the Mutual
Life.
Protest is Filed.
Samuel ITntermeyer, counsel of the
International committee of policy-hold
ers, sent the following telegram ti
State Superintendent of Insurance Kel
sey, at Albany:
"On behalf of the International com
mlttee I protest agalnkt the filing of
any certificate of nominations qt can
didates constituting the administration
ticket which contains the names of
Judge Gray, General Tracy, Colonel
Shook or Mr. Higginbotham, all mem
bers of our committee. These gentle
men were not consulted and will of
course refuse to act It was well
known from the vigorous public ad
dress signed and Issued by them on
July * that they are hostile to the ad
ministration ticket and advised policy
holders to defeat any and every can
didate named by the present manage
ment, because he was such nominee,
dictated by them and that they joined
a movement to prevent the re-election
of the old directors with whom they
are now asked to serve, or any direc
tors named by them. Its obvious pur
pose Is to confuse and deceive policy
holders Into the belief that they are
voting our committee’s, ticket when
they see these names on their ballot.
"The authorised use of the names of
the distinguished gentlemen without
their knowledge constitutes an evasion
of the law and a gross breach of pro
priety as to which they may possibly
have something to say at the proper
time. We ask that the company be
compelled to remove those names from
the ticket before It la filed.”
