millionaire Is Claud B. Leppelman, 28
years old, of this city, who for twelve
years has tolled nine’ hours a day and
I. now to be plunged Into the financial
world with 83,000,000 at his command.
Leppelman Is a clerk In' a dry goods
store.
Less than a year ago J. C. Ingraham,
a capitalist, died In New York. Execu
tors placed a valuation on his property
of 338,000,000. Leppelman Is one of
the eleven heirs. The dead man was
an uncle of Justice Ingraham and
great uncle of Leppelman.
SUPREME COURT JUDGE
ADMITS ASKING REBATE

Milwaukee, Wli., July 21.—It Is ad
mitted by Justice R. D. Marshall of the
supreme court that he'had asked that
the life Insurance agent’a commission
f,,r collection of the premium on his
policy he paid to him. He contends
that there was nothing wrong In his re
quest.
The matter came to light at the life
Insurance Investigating commission'*
meeting Thursday, when the corre*
apondence between Judge Marshall and
the company was read. The disclosures
made have created a sensation, and
Impeachment proceedings are hinted
at.

■ Friday morning the secretary of
state granted a charter to tHe Augusta
and Northwestern Railway, which the
Incorporators propose to build between
Augusta and Athens, a distance of 80
miles.
The line will run a northwesterly
direction through Richmond, Columbia,
McDuffie, Wilkes, Oglethorpe and
Clarke counties, with the principal of
fice In Augusta.
The capital stock Is named at 8100.

largest Umber deals of recent years In
Georgia has been perfected here. By
It the J. L. Phlltllps Lumber Company,
of Thomasvllle, has acquired from Ve
reen & Smith, of Moultrie, Go., and
XVIlllam Godfrey A Company, of Che-
raw, S. C„ timber lands aggregating
about 40,000 acres, lying around Tails-
hassee, '■'In. It Is estimated that the
timber will cut 260,000,000 feet of lum
ber. The largest portion of the timber
Is virgin round timber and the deal
carries turpentine, lumber and land.
Only a small part of the timber con
ed has been turpentined,
he consideration Involved Is about
3800,000. The Phillips Company will Im
mediately begin the erection of saw
mills for the manufacture of this tim
ber with a capacity of some 36,000,000
feet per year.

Quincy Taylor, of 10 Corput struct,
who la accused by his 10-year-old son,
Albert Taylor, of forcing him to drink,
under penalty of a thrashing, until he
became beastly Intoxicated, was arrest
ed Friday night by Policemen Arro-
wood and XVylle, and will be arraigned
Saturdiw afternoon before Recorder
Broyles. Taylor Is held prisoner In the
police station In default of a cash bond
of 3200.
Taylor, when seen Saturday morn
ing, admitted giving hla child ttvo
glasses of beer, but said he thought
any father had a perfect right to give
his own child whisky and beer If he so
desired. He denied .he threatened the
boy. The physicians at the Grady hos
pital, however, declare the child, when
received Into that Institution Thurs
day night, was In a terribly drunken
sondltlon and almost dead.
"I took my little boy up town with
me Thursday night," said the father,
"and gave him two glasses of b*er. I
did not buy the beer myself. A friend
