STATESMEN AND POLITICIANS
Mr. Anderson, of Chatham, and Mr.
Wright, of Floyd, hod a great time with
esrh other Wednesday afternoon dur
ing the debate on the Jamestown ap
propriation bill. It was all In good fun,
however. *
Mr. Wright was explaining why he
thought the appropriation of 150,000
too much. I Id' .aid:
"Gentlemen, we hive already spent
140.000 In collecting an exhibit and It
would be absurd to spend 150,000 In
giving the boys a good time at James
town. I am sorry I only heard the lat
ter part of the splendid oration of the
gentleman from Chatham"—
Mr. Anderson: "If the gentleman
- only heard the last half of my oration
and la willing to give 530.000, how
much wouldn’t he be willing to give
If he had heard It all?”
Mr. Wright: "Well, possibly sb, but
seriously, what would we do with so
much money? It Is an awful big heap
of It. The rail routs, wouldn't charge
us anything to haul the exhibit to Vir
ginia, and"-—'
Mr. Anderson: "Do I understand the
I gentleman from Floyd to say that he
would be In favor of the state asking
this favor of the railroads, and would
request them to haul this exhibit for
nothing?”
Mr. Wright: "Why not? They are
hauling this house for nothing.”
(Laughter and applause from every
corner of the house.)
Wednesday afternoon when Mr. An-*
demon, of Chatham, began what he
said was his first oratorical effort with
the words, "Near three hundred years
ago,” Mr. Wilson, of Gwinnett, who
was sitting near by, turned to his col-
. league, Mr. Nix, and Mr. Nowell, of
I Walton, and said, In A solemn tone:,
"Tw inkle, twinkle, little star—I guess
*s win havo that next.”
AH the psnt-up oratory engendered
: st the houhe this year broke out on
Wednesday afternoon In the debate
oo the Jamestown appropriation bill.
Mr. Alexander In a speech of twenty
minutes for the bill, paid a most glow
ing tribute to Virginia, her noble sons,
and what all of them had done for
Georgia. His speech was well pre
pared, full of beautiful figures and
clothed In similes that brought forth
rent applause from the floor to the
(tilery.
Seah Wright said It was all he
could do to keep from making a »p> eh
on (ho Jamestown bill. It offered such
peat opportunities for oratorical ef
fort.
The anti-pass bill keeps bobbing up
In some shape or other and It Is quite
certain that before long Joe Hall will
be able to get It before the house for
consideration.
Members of the house, when speak-
Jt for a bill, evenvir the speaker be
the author, never fall to disclaim credit
for the measure, which Is Invariably
one really fathered by the whole
house.- However, after the passage of
the bill, Just watch and see who does
the strutting and gets chesty.
"The grand old stats of Ge-o-rgla’
»u worked overtime In the orations
on the floor of the house Wednesday
wternoon.
