FAKE LORD GIVEN A LEASE ON LIFE By Private Leased Wire. Washington, July 58.—The supreme court of the United States yesterday received notice that the chief justice of the supreme court of Mlseourl had |S‘ sued an order extending for sixty days from July SO the Mme for the tiling of the transcript of the record In the case of "Lord" F. Seymour JJarrlngton, un der sentence of death In that state for murder. The fictitious English lord has led a variegated career In his swindling op erations In this country and England. He has swindled by shrewd confidence games and has wooed heiresses with all the ardor of a youthfu. lover. Bar rington met James P. McCann, a wealthy St. Louis horseman. McCann took pity upon the exposed and penni less wretch and gave him a home at his house. According to the testi mony upon which he was convicted, Barrington lured his host Into the country, murdered him, robbed the body and threw It Into a stream. Albert A. Clark, an old man, was arrested Friday afternoon by Detec tive Lockhart and charged with pass ing a forged check for $* at the Fa mous dry goods store on Decatur street. The check was signed with the name of A. E. Collins. When It waa found to bt worthless the officer was called In and soon succeeded In locat ing Clark. Judge Broyles bound him over to be tried In the city court. AMERICAN CONSUL ANGERS GERMANY ff pedal Cable—Copyright. Berlin, July 28.—It Is probable that the United States government will be asked to recall the American consul at Kohle because of his report of food adulterations In that section. The newspapers are very bitter In denun ciation of his report, which, they de clare, Is without foundation In. fact. By Prlvst* Leased Wire. New York, July 28—The Federal grand Jury appeared before Judgs Hough, In the United States district court, yesterday and handed up Indict ments for violations of the anti-rebate laws against three corporations, the names of which United States District Attorney Stlmson refused to give out for the public Information, on the ground that It would tend to defeat the ends of Justice. ' He admitted that no Individuals were named In the indictments. It Is almost certain that one of the corporations named In the Indictments Is the American Sugar Refining Com pany, as It Is known that for at least two weeks past that company's activ ity In the rebate business has occupied all of the Federal grand Jury's atten tlon. ARRESTS CERTAIN IN HARTJE CASE EARLY NEXT WEEK By Private Leased Wire. Pittsburg, July 28.—Matters have reached such a stage In the Hartje case that the arrest of two conspcluous personages, It Is said, will be no longer delayed. In all probability next week will see them arrested on charges of forgery and conspiracy. The admission by Susie Wagner yes terday that she had received three let ters from Mrs. Hartje, It is claimed, sustains the contention of Mrs. Hartje that she had not written the celebrated ‘‘Susie'' letter, exhibit No. 8, but that the second letter she had written sim ply contained the statement that she had broken up house keeping and was living with her mother and hoped Susie would be able to secure a position hers. This letter, Mrs. Hartje claimed, was a short one, whereas the famous No. 6" exhibit Is lengthy. The de fense asserts that the second letter was used as a copy, and additions made to It. The assistant district attorney admits that he has a deposition made by a negro who states, In substance, that Hooe, the negro coachman, asked him to go along wit" 1 ‘ ' Ith him In a story to the effect that he had seen Mrs. Hartje and Hooe together, the latter saying there would be good money In It. AT FLAT" BUT NOTHING DOING Just after midnight Friday night the tetephope at the police station rang sharply and Call Officer Gallaher went to the box. In a moment he emerged and ran for his bicycle. ‘‘Burglars,’’ he said. “Burglars at the Carlton flats.” Call Officer Dunton Joined him and the two sped to the corner of Fatrlle street and Carnegie way. Here they found an excited woman with a story to tell. "You see my window Is on the base ment floor and the sidewalk Is almost level with It." she explained. "I saw the shadow of a man passing by. He stopped and then I heard him tiptoe The officers looked at the window and the sidewalk. Then they explained that It was very natural for a man to walk by, even after midnight. There was no trace of any burglary and they returned to the police station, leaving the frightened flat dweller to slumber again. By Private Leased Win. New York, July 28.—Counsel for Harry Kendall Thaw. It was said to day, are likely to ask for a change of venue before the date set for his trial. October 1$. for the murder of Stan ford White. It will be argued that the attention of the community has been aroused such an extent that a fair and Impar tlal trial In this county Is Impossible. The district attorney will oppose such a move. Assistant District Attorney darvan. It Is believed, has In his pos session the letter written to Stanford White by Evelyn Nesblt In the stormy period preceding her marriage to liar ry Thaw. That these letters are In existence known, and It was said today that they were found among White's effects and turned over to the district attorney's office. * There Is a possibility that the din trlct attorney may ask that a commie slon be appointed to Inquire Into Thaw's mental state. Carnegie Is 8ssrchsd. Mr. and Mrs. George Luder Carnegie, the latter Harry Thaw's sister, visited him In the Tombs today. They were Joined there by Evelyn Nesblt Thaw and Roger O'Mars, the Pittsburg de< trctlve. This was the first visit of Mr. Car negie to Harry Thaw since the latter has been In the Tombs. He was sub mlttsd to the most rigorous search bo fore permitted to go to Thaw's call. ALL SOUTHERN RUSSIA SEE THING IN RE VOL T Manifesto of Dissolved Douma Is Causing Endless Strife. MUTINY REPORTED OF BIG GARRISON Prince Lvofl Declines to Ac cept a Portfolio in the Stoly Pin Cab inet. By GEORGE FRAZER. Pr Private leased Wire. ‘ St. Petersburg, July 21.—Despite all the efforts of the government to pre vent the fact from becoming public, there Is ho doubt that all of south Russia Is seething with revolt and that 'the situation there Is rapidly approach ing a condition of armed revolution. It Is estimated that In the govern ment of Kharkoff there are close to 90,000 men organised, many of them armed and drilled by men who have served In the army. At Yusovka, one of the principal smelting centers In southern Russia, workmen have risen and seised the smelting establishment, and It Is said that troops sent tn quell the uprising have Joined the rebels. Peasants Are Active. All through the south the peas ants also are particularly active, and In many Instances have organised n system of guerilla warfare, which Is extremely difficult for the authorities to successfully combat In the govern ment of Podola, attempts to arrest agi tators have been vigorously resisted by the people, and at Poskurov the whole town rose and rescued the revolution ary leaders, who had been arrested by detachments of dragoons. In many places barricades have been erected, defense committees formed and the announcement Is plain to Interfere with the liberty of leaders will be resisted by force. Manifesto Causes Strife The manifesto of the douma Is being circulated as rapidly as possible, and It Is notable that as fast as It reaches a locality disorders begin there. Despite the fact that scores of men were arrested In Moscow, while pine ardlng the walls of the city with the manifesto, others took thslr places, end the city Is plastered with copies of the document. A printing office waa seised last night at Yaroslav by armed men and a vAst number of the manifesto were run off. Another manifesto has been Issued, addressed to the peasants, pointing out the grievances under which they suffer, and the Impossibility of their receiving any relief at the hands of the govern ment as at present constituted. Mutiny Is Reported. It Is reported that a widespread mu tiny has occurred at Kronstadt and that practically the entire garrison Is In revdlt. One report has It that the famous Semanovsky regiment has de cided to cast In its lot with the people. Prince Nicholas Lvoff has declined to accept a position Jn the Btolypin cabi net. Special Instructions were Issued to* deputies to the dissolved dnuma were not to be expelled from the capital, although under the law It Is forbidden for Jews to reside in St. Petersburg. Two new steamship lines are tn be established between Llbau and New York under government authority and with government md. The Idea Is to make It easy for the dissatisfied els. ment to leave the empire. Measures of this kind, however, are likely to do very little good. TRY A WANT AD IN THE GEORGIAN THIRTY-NINE COUNTIES SHOW GAIN OF$6,872,525 1909 show a net gain In values of $9,872,626 over : The same counties for 1906 showed a gain of 17,219,289, At first blush It would appear from these figures that the wealth of the state Is not Increasing as rapidly In 1909 as In 1905. But an Important detail not here appearing dissipates this Idea. Sev eral of the counties In these thirty-nine are counties from which part of thslr territory hss been cut off Into new counties. Of course, these counties lost several large districts, the returns for which will go Into the new counties. Eliminating such districts, the thirty-nine counties will actually show an Increase over the huge total of 1905.
