Memphis Sneaks Second Place
Away From Smith 9 s Crackers
Memphis. dod gast her!
Every time It look* M though Atlanta
bad a chant** In the pennant race* those
accursed Babblers butt In.
Never did Atlanta visit Memphis that tbe
Cracker* did not tumble. Never haa Mem*
phla come here that the same thing did
not happen.
And now, right here nt the first of Au
gust. with the teams almost ready to enter
the last lap of the contest, those blooming
red necks, those burglars, hare to bump
In with a double-header and take aecond
place from us, Juat at a time when It look*
ed ns though the place waa cinched.
Of all the lohumab, acta ever perpetrated
this heats them all. *
The pennant race right now la so warm
that It Is hard to get within talking dis
tance of It.
Birmingham's lead la decidedly wobbly.
Just now the Barons nre running true
and fast, but one swerro or one stumhlo
will drop them back to nowhere. Ho far,
the nirmlnghamltes have taken every hur
dle and every ditch without a bobble, but
It will surprise nobody to see them come
a cropper nt any stage.
Memphis has come up from nowhere In
the last couple of weeks, -and will be
bard to head. With Llebhardt winning
three or four games a week, and the
other pitchers doing pretty well—even down
to fjourks, the Babblers have a wonder
fully good chance for the pennant.
Affnnfn Is In third place by a «hInker.
Winning work will put Billy Smith's team
In second place In a day or two, and n
single tnlacue will put ths bunch In fourth
place In that time or lea*. Just now the
Crockers ore .003 behind Memphis, and .003
nhend of New Orleans.
New- Orleans, whirl) club has made a
spectacular drop from first to fourth place,
Is far from being counted out.
Frank's million dollar aggregation Is only
.<#8 from Birmingham, and a winning
streak will put the Pelicans back at tbo
front In fast style.
Shreveport haa taken her uanal midsum
mer drop, and la back In the second divi
sion, after flirting with the lead for weeks
and weeks. It la probable that Gllks' team
can nearly be counted out of tbe pennant
race, though anybody who beta money on
It Is taking a chnnce. Bobby Gllks la a
hard man to keep down, and If he can
ever round his team Into Ita true form,
ho la llksly to be up In select company any
day.
Montgomery la a strong finisher, and al
ways was, but Dominick Mullaney'a team
can probably lie safely counted ouj. Tbo
Climbers are In sixth place, and that la
very far from tbe top, even In a race so
close as la the one In the Southern
League. '
If the present race has ever been beaten
In Interest In the South, It Is hard to tell
when. In yearn past, two or three tearna
have been hung around the top, but not
even when Atlnuta harpooned New Or
leans In 1904 mid allowed Memphis to land
the pennant by a whisker, or back In the
mlatr past, when Mike Finn aud Little
Bock participated In a couple of eyolatb
finishes, haa thta one been equalled.
Just now only .070 separates the leading
team from the fifth, and tho prospects for
ettdden changes arc bright
Atlanta baa a hard time ahead of her.
Within tbo next two weeks the Crackers
have two aeries against tbe Birmingham
team, now the league lenders. Up to the
present, the local team has always been
side to take the measure of the Bnrona, but
they will And the Birmingham bunch hard
to beat this trip. However, here'a hoping
for the l**st.

IN SPITE OF HARD RAIN
ATLANTA GETS ONE GAME
ATLANTA 1 NASHVILLE 0
Tho umpires and the rain-makers seem to have combined to beat Atlanta
out of a. double-header with Nashville. The attempt to play It Tuesday was
frustrated by Umpire Shuster. On Wednesday, Billy Smith tried It again, but rsto
fell before the first gantb waa well under way,’ and the opener was called off, aud
the second game played. 1
Of course, Atlanta won It, but It waa by a narrow margin of one run to none.
Buchanan pitched for Nashville, and did remarkably well. On “form," Buch-
, nnnu has It over almost every pitcher In the league. His delivery Is more than
businesslike, and be seems to have a little of everything. He allowed Atlanta just
three hits, and except for battery errors of his own doing, would have scored
a shut out.
Itube Zeller officiated for Atlanta, and accomplished his shut-out with compara
tive ease. The Nashville batters found him safely only five times, and with good
support he managed to keep the Tennesseeans away from tho home plate.
Croxler, the flrat man up for Atlanta, brought home the winning run. Ho open
ed up with a single, took second on a wild pitch, and third on a bajk. Then
Jordan struck out, but Winters sent a fly to center field, on which CroaJer
■cored. After that, the Atlanta batters were practically helpless, and could do
nothing with Buchanan's delivery.
The first game went only a half inning before rain fell. Nashville had
been retired In one-two-three order, and Atlanta had Just begun to do buslneia
when the rain came. And It certainly did rain some for a few minutes, and tbe
wind which came with It sent the water right through the stand, making things
decidedly wet both under shelter and on the diamond.
In spite of the wet grounds, however, the second game was played off In rea
sonably fast time.

Billy Smith Is Suspended;
Shuster May Have Jumped
The Atlanta playera left Wednesday
night for Montgomery, where they play
Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
With them went Billy Smith, but Wil
liam Is under suspension. Ju*$ l*efore tbe
aecond game Wednesday, Umpire Buckley
received notice from league headquarters
that Smith waa Indefinitely suspended, and
ordering him to keep the Atlanta mnnager
off the grounds.
As soon as Billy Smith .was notified he
put on his cltlxens clothes, and when tht
second game l»egitn he disappeared.
Smith waa suspended because of bis at
tempted assault on Umpire Shuster. It la
stated that Shuster notified President Kav-
nnnugh that Smith actually hit him. It Is
well known by all who saw the Incident
that Smith did not actually hit the tubby
umps, and If Shuster made such a charge
he waa In error, to put It mildly.
