West End Presbyterian church, and one
of Atlanta's most prominent ministers,
has been offered the presidency of the
Presbyterian Collegiate Institute, to be
situated at De Funlak, Fla. Mr.
Walker is considering the matter and
will. In a few days, visit DeFunlak In
order to look over the field In person.
In talking of the school and his pro
posed connection with It Monday morn
ing, Mr. Walker said:
"It Is hardly probable that I will ac
cept. I like Atlanta, and* 1 think
shall stay here."
Mr. Walker says that the school will
be the largest Presbyterian Institute
Florida. The Institute, -or rather the
proposed Institute, has purchased the
buildings of the State Normal school

kee county candidate* and their friends
had a warm time at a meeting at Ma-
brys Springs Saturday. A riot was
prevented only by the presence of sev
eral cool, level-headed eltliens. It Is
reported that knaves and pistols were
drawn and flourished promiscuously.
There was no bloodshed. Another week
of campaigning Is ahead and no one
can foretell thc end.
HARDWICK DECLARES

thousand voters gathered here Satur
day to hear the address of Hon. T. W.
Hardwick, congressman from the Tenth
district. In behalf of the disfranchise
ment measure and the candidacy of
Hen. Hoke Smith, for governor.
Mr. Hardwick spoke about two hours
tnd live minutes.
In speaking of the charge that Hoke
Smith hail made ft deal with Thomas
E. Wat ton, he declared that he was
the man who went to Mr. Watson and
begged hint to return Into the fold;
that he had heard Mr. ‘Watson In n
speech In the city of Atlanta make the

man would make the light In the Dem

IN DUEL TO THE DEATH
BOTH MEN ARE KILLED

Chadwick, • Mo., Aug. 6.—Charles
Freeman, a merchant here and at Gar
rison, and Robert Keene, 18 years old,
fought a duel to the death with re
volvers here. The shooting grew out
of a suit brought by Freeman against
Keene, charging an attack on hi*
15-year-old dflugLter.
When the men met on the street
yesterday they Immediately drew their
weapons and began firing. Freeman
was shot twice, one bullet penetrating
the forehead and another the left
breast, near t'te heart. Keene uas
shot three times, once near the heart.
Both were dead when the spectators
reached them.

tion, Senator Fred Dubois dramatically
declared that neither ht nor any oth
er candidate <m the Democratic ticket
had a ghost of a show for election, and
he attributed It to the Mormon vote.
"Nevertheless,” he said, "I shall In
sist on the adoption of a resolution at
the convention tomorrow favoring the
re-enactment of tha atatute requiring
all voters to register an nath that they
are not polygamists and that thsy do
not place ecclesiastical law above civil
law. That will effectually bar the
Mormons.” -
Dubois controls the convention. Such
a resolution will surely be passed, ns
will also one Indorsing Bryan for
president. Dubois' follower* predict
that an anti-Mormon resolution will
attract enough Republican rows to *n
able him to win.

SLAYER OF MAN PREFERS
SUICIDE TO BEING HANGED

nont farmer, living near hefe, after he
had on yesterday shot and Instantly
killed Nicholas Bertl. aged 18, a well
known resident of this city.
Then men had been to a party and
were returning home together when
they got Into a quarrel. Cordelia went
to his barn, got a shotgun and killed
Bertl. Then he fled and took refuge In
a vineyard, where he was found by
detectives. He confessed to having
shot Bertl, but said he did not want to
hang.

a free fight In which several men were

UNEARTH A STILL

Cumberland, Md., Aug. 8.—Wabash
endleneers yesterday unearthed the
operations of a mysterious moonshiner,
near Dldwelt, forty miles above here.
Surveyors - located a spring and near
by a still was found. Boms moonshine
whisky was also discovered, but the
moonshiner was missing. The revenue
officer* knew of etm* In that section,
but were never able to locate them.
