Mrs. Virgil Maddox entertained the
"500" club Tuesday afternoon at the
home of Mrs. C. J. Maddox, at Inman
park, where she Is spending the sum*
mer.
Mr. Maddox's residence wax deco
rated with roses, ferna and palms, and
the game was played on the wide ve*
jsndas. A delightful luncheon was
served during the afternoon. The first
prise, a handsome hand-painted cake
plate, was won by Mrs. Larendon; the
consolation, a pair of ribbon sleeve-
holders, became Mrs. C. J. Maddox's,
and the guest prise, a beautiful almond
dish of Japanese design, was presented
to Miss Flanders.
The 'score cards were artlstle pen
and Ink sketches. ,

TWO YOUNG MEN
ARE CONVICTED
OF HOTEL ROBBERY

Savannah,,.Ga., Aug. 8.—8. H. Reid
and J. H. Henderson, two young men
convicted of entering rooms at Hotel
Tybee, were sentenced by Judge Cann
yesterday,; th* former receiving one
year In the state prison and the latter
five years. Th* evidence showed that
Henderson had planned the robberies
and watched while Reid did the work.
Reid Is an opium fiend. The youni
men came here .from Jacksonville am_
went Immediately to Tybee, where they
began operations. ,

Valdosta recently received from the
treasury at Washington 31,000 In “Co
lumbian" half dollars, which It ta hav
ing considerable trouble putting In cir
culation. When the coins made 'their
appearance here a few days ago, owing
to their oddity and to the fact that
many people thought they were at-a
premium, they were accepted readily,
and there were many Inquiries for
them In the city. Not so, however. In
other sections. The bank shipped less
than 3100 In these coins to an out-*f-
town customer and today received a
letter from the customer stating that
the coins could not be used, aa the

The new bale brought to Augusta
wax placed In front of the fcxchange
at about 4 o'clock Tuesday. It was
consigned to Clarke & Butt, : One ol
the new cotton firms In Augusta, and
they will sell the bale In front of the
cotton exchange today at auction.' Ths
cotton wax raised by H. M. Eld ridge,
a prominent farmer of Sumter county.
