House Committee Reports
Against McHenry
Measure. 1
The McHenry bill for the lease of tha
Western and Atlantic railroad will not
pass the loner house. The railroad
committee of that body met Wednesday
afternoon and reported against the
measure, with but one member favoring
the lease.
Senator McHenry, of Floyd. author
of the bill to lease the road to the
Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis
railway for sixty years from the ex
piration of the present lease, was pres
ent at the Brat meeting of the commit
tee on Tuesday afternoon and.argued In
favor of his measure, which had al
ready passed the senate.. On Wednes
day morning President West, of the
senate, appeared Irafnre the house com
mittee and argued In behalf of the bill,
contending that to lease the road for
sixty years at 1720,000 a year was to
make a 0 per cent anndht Investment
on the cost of the road. 111,100,000.
contended that this was a better
vestment than can be usually made
an amount of such magnitude.
The members of the committee were
not In favor of renewing the lease at
any time, and certainly not at this ses
sion, thirteen years before the expira
tion of the old lease.

ander and Representative Brinson fa
vor the extension of the road to the
sea and poeslbly to bath the gulf and
the Atlantic. There Is a constitutional
provision against this, but the difficulty
may be removed by action of the peo.

saw the woman In time, knocked the
bottle from her hand before ehe got all
the poison, and then forced her to

the hospital doctors.

^Conyers,' Ga., Aug. I.—'The Thirty
fifth Georgia regiment held Its reunion
at this place yesterday, the guests of
the Conyers Chapel, U. D. C. There
were present thirty-five survivors of
the regiment and two or three hundred
veterans of other organisations. The
veterans were taken In charge by W.
F. McDaniel, master of ceremonies, who
had them assemble at the court-house,
where they were provided with badges
and formed for march to the new rock
warehouse, where the exercise* were
conducted.

by local and visiting veterans, and a

lodge of the Ancient order United
Workmen opened here yesterday morn
ing with about fifty delegate* present,
together with the grand lodge officer*.

presiding. There were a number of

session aftsr the short opening cere
monies.
After the opening ceremonies a short
organising meeting was ticld, and then
the officer* and delegates went to the
Plats and enjoyed a delightful barbecue
dinner, which had been prepared for
them under the able supervision of one
of their members, Harry H. Morris,
sheriff of the city of Augusta.
After the 'cue and later In the after
noon the delegates were taken for
spin around the car llnss. and then ta
Lake View, where they were given a
boat trip over the waters. They had to
be on the go all the afternoon, and to
day they will be ready to again take
up the bualneaa matters before the
grand lodge.

moved to Floyd county several years
ago from Chicago and purchased a
farm near Rome, has decided to give
up farming here and will return to bis
old home.
Mr. Clark says .that he has found
that farming was unprofitable In this
section, owing lo the Inability of *e
curing competent laborer*. He said
that he would hire negroes to wirk
his farm, thinking they were trust
worthy, and In a few days they would
skip out without giving him any no<
lice.
Mr. Clark says that his views In re
gard to tha negro have-changed ms

George W. Campbell, a well-known
business jnpn of Rome, has been ap
pointed general Southern agent of the
Underwriters' Salvage Company, and
has made arrangements to open an of
fice In Atlanta. He will have quite a
force of men working directly under

Attending Maneuvers.
Captain Barry Wright and quite
number of the Hill City cadets left
yesterday morning for Chlckamauga to
attend the army maneuver*. They will
be absent several days, and will study
closely the army tactics.

DISTILLERY FIRE
CAUSES HEAVY LOSS

Columbus, Ga., Aug. .9.—The Wood
Campbell distillery, located In Girard,
wae totally destroyed by Are Tuesday
night, ths loss being about $1,000. The
■till had only been In operation about
a month, and Mr. Campbell, the owner,
had not cleared the Interest on the
money Invested. The Are le believed
to have been Incendiary. Eighteen bar
rels of whisky Were saved, but a large
lot of bottled goods was destroyed.

Baton Rouge, La., Aug. 9.—The an
nual reunion of the United Confederate
Veterans, the United Daughters of the
Confederacy and the Sons of Confed
erate Veterans began here today wltlr
' ge attendances at the sessions of
each of the organisations. Governor
Blanchard delivered the address of wel
come on behalf of the state, and Mayor
W. H. Bynum for the city. The re
union Is being held at Garlg Hall.
This evening there will be a flower
parade and at night tableaux, songs
and other patriotic features, conclud
ing with a dance. The reunion will
end tomorrow with a parade of the
veterans during tha day and a grand
ball at night.

PRISONER REFUSES
TO JOIN ESCAPE

Morgantown, W. Va.. Aug. 9.—Buck
Klttlswell, alias Frank Howell; Jeff
Taylor and Carl Gross, broke out of tho
county Jail here early this morning and
escaped Into Pennsylvania. Walter
Ftum, held on a murder charge, had a
chnnco to escape with them, but re
fused to Join them. Four steel bars
were pried from the Jail window. It Is
believed they had assistance from the
