One of the most enjoyable affairs of
the season was the reception glven'last
Tuesday evening by A!Isa Pearl Jones
at her beautiful home on Anderson
avenue. In honor of Miss Alva Jenkins,
of Tuscaloosa, Ala. The guests began
to arrive at 9 o'clock nnd tmmedlgtely
upon entering the house were served
with delicious punch; they then.dis
persed to the lawns and porches. As
soon as the crowd had nssembled the
game of hearts and mittens was begun.
This proved to be a verj' entertaining
and amusing game. Each young man
was required to make love to the
young lady whom he had drawn as a
partner. At the sound of the gong
partners were exchanged and the love,
making began anew. Mr. Fred P
Shepard won the prise for being the
best love-maker, while Mr. Sydney Wil-
aon was awarded the booby. At a
late hour cream and cake were served.

formerly a druggist, shot Amanda Er
win Connors, an actress, on the street

expected soon.
Both were conscious when found ly

agreed to die together.

that they entered Into, a conspiracy to
poison her, Mra. Claudle Morris has
caused the arrest of Mr*. Minnie Kro-
nenberg and Mandy Wynn, a ne

Battleship Is Damaged.

8tatea battleship Illinois, Injured last
week in a collision with the Alabama
at Newport, R. L, has arrived at the
Brooklyn navy yard. She will be put
In dry dock at once until the full ex
tent ot the damage from the accident
can be determined.
Fire Excited Girls.
A small blase In the engine room of
the Royal Box Factory, corner John
and Decatur streets, caused a little ex
citement Thursday morning about 7:80
o’clock. The damage done by the blaxe
was very slight and It took but a short
while to extinguish the Are. Owing to
the early hour only a few of the young
girls and women employed In the fac
tor)’ were on hand. The few there,
however, became excited when the
smoke from the fire filled the main
building. The damage will not exceed
850.

Cumberland, Md, Aug. 9.—Burr Mal
colm, of Rlgglnsvllle, W. Va, was
wns drowned in the south branch of
the Potomac, near Springfield, W. Va.
in. the presence of his wife and child,
while on a fishing trip. He was seised
with cramps or became exhausted as
he attempted to swim across the river.

Order of United Workmen Grand
Lodge adjourned at 2 o'clock today, to
meet In Charleston, S. C„ In 1908. Ths
officers were elected, which resulted In
a number of changes, one being the
selection of a new recorder.
The recorder had been in the position
for the pest 25 year*.

containing twenty women of a picnic
party last night plunged over a 20-foot
precipice, on a county road at Ever
green, 9 miles from here, and all sus
tained more or less serious Injuries.
None was fatally hurt.

Boiwer, an employee of the American
Tobacco Company, attempted to burn
himself alive yesterday by leaping Into
the furnace under the boiler at one ot
the company's factories. He waa
dragged out before he waa fatally
burned. Religious mania la assigned as
the cause of the act.
