New York, August 18.—Aa the be havior of the market In the laat half hour of Saturday's session 'had fore shadowed, no aerloua Ihltuence waa ex ercised today either by the heavy shrinkage of bank raaervea or by the comparative flrmnees which followed It In today's money market. Both call and time loans were maintained at laat week’s higher level, but quotations went no higher. The bulk of the day’s new credit business on the stock ex change waa arranged for from 4 to 4 1-1 per cent. On the other hand, some encouragement wai afforded by n further decline In sterling exchange to day, and by the disclosure that the banka ntart the week with a gain of 11,100,000 in their operatlona at the subtreaaury. The ruling figures on de mand sterling arc now ao close to the gold Import point that engagements at any moment are likely. If money rate* were to rise any higher than they nre It would Immediately precipitate the movement, and It la evident that rely ing on thla la why the stock market re fuses to take a more aerloua view of the money outlook. At the opening to day Brooklyn Rapid Transit fell 2 points on the Be fare decision and the disturbances occasioned by It on the company's line yesterday. But the gen eral Hat waa entirely unaffected by the drop In thla stock. It followed a higher London range, and throughout the fore noon kept pointed pretty constantly up ward. The great strength In the Pa cific sltareo, heavy buying of the Cop per shares, and a smart fall In the In' terborouglt Rapid Transit Issues on the publication of the favorable showing for the June quarter were the main fea tures for the trading. The Block market, opened at almost general advances extending to 8-4 In Reading, Baltimore and Ohio and St. Paul, the latter up 3-8. Atchison, Can adian Pacific, Metropolitan and Union Pacific were 1-4 higher. . Brooklyn Rapid Transit was exceptionally weak, and down 1 7-8 at the opening at 781-8. Amalgamated copper o;iened 1-4 higher. After Irregular changes In the first few minutes the market became decid edly stronger and material gains were made all around the room, aome stocks advancing to the highest prices reach ed this year. Southern Pacific was the most prominent feature. After early salea at 78 1-1, It advanced t|> 78 7-8, The buying was one of the most Ivt- B receive character. Union Pacific pnil t. Paul b’oth rose on buying of the same character aa Southern Pacific. Rapid Trt largo part Anaconda strong. An effort waa made to dep-ess Penn sylvania In the early trading, but the stock was In good demand. London bought 12,000 share*. Governments unchanged. Other bonds quiet and firm.
