TROLLEY HITS AUTO CROWDED CM FULLS INTO STAGNANT POOL EIGHT PERSONS HURT A Dozen Others Nearly Drowned in Evil-Smell- iug Water. ASKS A LARGE SUM FOR RIS SERVICES Special to The Georgian. Cleveland, Ohio, Aug. 13.—Eight* per son* were Injured and a dozen others nearly drowned last night when a car containing fifty persons on the Cleve land and Eastern Traction line Jumped the track eight miles southwest of (’harden, Ohio, and plunged Into a large stagnant pool. The car was headed toward this city and was going at moderate speed, when the accident happened.* Henry Hof- ller, conductor of the car, received se rious Internal Injuries and may die. TWO NEGROESllLLEO ev SWITCH ENGINE Bpcdn I to The i.Vorghtn. Adrian, Ga., Aug. 13.—Two negroes, Maehen Burney, and Adam Glvins, were rub over here by the yard engine <-f the E. P. Rents Lumber Company. Th* men, after returning from the woods where they x.ork, got some whisky from some place, and, os they wen* coming through the yard, drunk, were struck by the switch engine, cut ting both legs off each. They were given medical attention at once, but before the doctohi had completed dressing their wounds, the men were both dead. That once doughty fighter and still aspiring actor, Robert Fitzsimmons, sold “Senator Reynolds'* the other day for $5,000. The “Senator” Is a big 2-year-old lion which hns been almost a member of Ruby Bob’s family for the past eighteen months. The pur chaser was Bostock, of Coney Island, the deal being made over the telephone. Many In the large crowd assembled at the American Horse Exchange were moved to teurs at the affecting part ing. In which Mr. Fitzsimmons and Ills lion took leading rales. The actor was genuinely moved, and It Is safe to sny that he never did anything better be hind the footlights. There were two real teurs In Mr. Fitzsimmons* eyes, one . In each of them, and a catch in his voice, as he said: “Why, $5,000 wouldn’t have touched that lion if 1 could have stayed at home all the time to keep him company. He loved me, and l thought the world and all of him. But ho didn't seem to take to anybody else and I was afraid he would cat one of my children some time when I was away. He took sev eral bites out of a good horse of mine the other day and I'nv afraid It will never be the same horse again. It wasn't that the Senator was ill-tent 'd, he’s got a sweet disposition, but playful, very playful, and a little rough at times. I’ve got to go away this fall with my show, *A Fight for Love,’ and 1 didn’t dare to leave the big fellow at home;” and Mr. Fitzsim mons sighed profoundly. “Scb” and Lion on Broadway. The big lion hud been shipped to the American Horse Exchange recently. Mr. Fitzsimmons, no longer able to endure the strain, left his home In Dunellen, N. J., and came to have an other look at hfs pet. He found him almost prostrated by the heat and as tonished the crowd by taking him out of Ills cage and walking up and down Broadway. The Senator ^as only re strained by a small packing cord and the curious throng fell back t spertful distance. “Couldn't he break that string, Bob?” queried an-anxious Admirer, edging backward as he spoke. “Like a cotton thread,” answered Mr. Fitzsimmons pleasantly. “But he wouldn’t think of hurting anybody be fore me, he’s that considerate of rny feelings—never chews any one up un less I’m out of sight.” Mr. Fitzsimmons then mounted the top of the Henator’s cage with the Hon and posed for u picture, after which he forced th« animal Into the the deal was closed on the spot. No Effdrt at Secrecy. There wns no effort on the part of Mr. Kttxslmmons to keep the details of the trade from the public. With al most childlike candor he discussed the affair nt length, dwelling particularly upon the necessity of leaving home In the fall with his wife In his show, “The Fight for Love." The actor’s mana ger was present and sujipllrd any lit tie Incidents which, had been overlook* ed during the conversation. It will bo remembered that “Senatcr Reynolds” was the lion which caussd Mr. F'ltzslmmcns to remain In durance vile in a cell at the Coney Island police station, for two hours and a half in the spring of 1905. Senator Reynolds, the statesman, had given the lion—his namesake—to Rob ert when the animal was only a few months old. With the Jmpr tuoidty which frequently characterized his ac tion In the prize ring. Mr. Fitzsimmons entered the cage without saying any thing Uf Mr. Bostock about the Sena tor’s gift, and took the little Hon away It looked so much like theft to the anl mat trainer that he caused the fighter’s arrest. For two hours Mr. Fitzsim mons remained In a cell while the mat ter was being explained. As In the present case, theie wns no effort at the time to keep the affair from the papers. “I raised that Hon from a pup—I mean cub,” said Mr. Fitzsimmons, "und I certainly do hate to give him up; but 1 got to go with’my show ’The Fight for Love’—that’s the name of It—have you gut that right?” TO BE ESTABLISHED One Woman Is Slain and Another Likely To Die. tty Private Leued Wire. CLARK S|M*« lnl to The Georgian, Jackson, MW, Aug. 13.—President Clark of the Mississippi Cotton Asso ciation, has Issued the following state ment In regard to the crop In this state: “The crop, while generally good, Is the worst spotted In years, and It will be hard to estimate, with any degree of accuracy. With tho present esti mates ranging from 11,000,000 to 14,- 000,000 bales, the . spinners will buy very sparingly. To meet this condition the farmer hu«* but one safeguard, ’sell sparingly/ and we will have a gradu ally advancing market. “I am constantly examining the fields end I find that in many eases the crop is being overestimated, t^ie- to the large and rapid grow Eli. However, there Is yet time to add the fruit, und It behoove* us to watch conditions very carefully and not deceive our selves.” Blanks were sent out today by Sec retary Wo»sis to the officers of county organizations and other correspond ents on which to make their reports concerning crop conditions on August 30.
