LYNCHING IS FEARED

Jacksonville. Fla.. Aug. 16.—Henry
Davis, an aged white man, who was
murderously assaulted at his home, 19
miles west of this city Monday night,
while asleep In bed. by an unknown
man, who used an axe. died last night.
At the same time the assailant at
tempted to assault Mrs. Davis, but her
screams frightened him away.
Two deputy sheriffs with n cltl sens'
posse of 6a men are scouring the woods
for the murderer. Davis was a prom
inent man In Ills home section and a
planter 7» years old.
If caught the assailant will be
lynched.
CALL OFFICERS CHASE
REPORT
. A phantom was chased for more than
two hours In the neighborhood of Pratt
dnd Gilmer streets by officers Chan
dler «ml. Luck Wednesday.
Late In the afternoon some one called
up the police station and said if an
officer were sent to the corner of Pratt
and Gilmer streets the negro who at
tempt to assault Mrs. Hembree In Bat
tle Hill might he caught.
Officers Luck and Chandler grabbed
their bikes and bustled out of the
headquarters like a young cyclone.
When they reached their destination
a young white man approached them
and told them If they would follow a
“feller who had Just gone 'round the
corner” they could catch the mun who
assaulted Mrs. Hembree.
The two officers rode round the cor
ner, but didn't see nay one. They rod©
around another corner and another and
still another, until perspiration was
pouring <»ff of them In streams, but no
•'feller who had gone ’round the cor-
ne« ,M did they see.
The two officers notified Patrolmen
Dodd and Norman, who took up the
chase where Luck and Chandler had
left off, and after turning several more
corners they cornered the phantom.
The cornered man gave his name as
Murphy.-but didn’t seem to know ex
actly what he did know, because he
didn't know It. He was turned loose.
DECOMPOSED BODY
FOUND IN RESERVOIR.

Charleston, H. C., Aug. 16.—The de
composed body of a negro was found
floating on the water of the Oe<
Street reservoir by nn employee of
Charleston Light nnd Water Company.
Notification to the police revealed the
mystery. On last Sunday night Jo
seph Weathers got (trunk, and tried to
kill his wife. Ho fired two shots at
her and then fled, followed by two .
llcemen. Weathers disappeared and
the police were unable to locate him.

FARMERS’ INSTITUTE
RALLY AT COVINGTON.

Covington, G«., Aug. 16.—The New
ton County Farmers* Institute held a
rally here, a large crowd being pres
ent. The speaking, which occurred In
the court house, was begun by Mr.
Stewart, followed by Mrs. W. H. Fel
ton, who spoke upon the subject of
farming nnd education.
After Mrs. Felton’s address tho
meeting adjourned to the Academy
Springs, where a barbecue, under the
direction of a committer composed of
F. D. Ballard, Lewis, Maddox and
others, was prepared. In the afternoon
Colonel la. F. Livingston delivered a
practical address on marketing cotton,
and O. W. Hunnicut followed with the
subject of science on the farm. A. C.
Lewis, assistant stnte entomologist,
spoke on the subjects of Insects and
their effects on cotton.

of Pythias, at a meeting held last night
discussed the proposed trip to New
Orleans to attend the biennial meeting
of the supreme lodge of the Knights
of Pythias on October K», The com

petition. At the last meeting of the
supreme lodge the Georgia company
tied for first place. The members ex
pect to return from the coming meet
ing the undisputed champion drill

that plans would he adopted whereby
a policyholder's ticket could he assured

SUSPICIOUS NEGRO
HELD UP TRAIN CREW

Decatur, Ala., Aug. 16.—With a pair
of ugly looking revolvers, of large cal
iber, In hls hands, Alex Holt, a negro,
hoarded a Louisville and Nashville
freight train near Newcastle, not far
from Birmingham, and ordered Kngl-
neef B. A. Thomas and the rest of th©
crew to not molest him at th© peril of
their lives. The train men were afraid
to molest him, and as a result the train
was practically under the negro’s
charge from Newcastle to New De
catur, a distance of about 80 miles.

Gadsden, Ala., Aug. 16.—J. W. Isbell,
of Russellville, has bought two lots at
the corner of Forest avenue and
Twelfth street, from J. H. Lovejoy

Bad Meat at Restaurant,
Jim Mitchell, who runs the Olympia
restaurant on Mitchell street, was

Harry Erwin, who Is wanted on the
harge of larceny after trust, charged

Dodge to Issue Bonds.

Kastman, Ga., Aug. 16.—Dodge coun
ty has voted to issue 9100,000 In bonds
to be used for the erection of a new
court house and the improvement of
country roads. Plans have already
been adopted for the court house,
which will cost 975,000.

lanta, Birmingham and Atlantic rail
road has received three new handsome
vestibuled passenger cars, which have

commissioners met yesterday and ap
propriated 910,000 for the Improvement
of the Floyd county Jail. The work
will begin soon after the meeting next
Monday afternoon, when the lowest
bidder for the reconstruction work will
be given the contract. *

A City Gone Broke.

Albany, Ga., Aug. 16.—-The city of
Albany is •’broke.” For the first time
in three years the city treasurer finds
that he Is without funds with which to
carry on the city’s business. This Is
due to the fact that the city made the
last payment of 96,000 on the street
paving that was recently done here.
Laying Underground Wires.
Savannah, Ga., Aug. 16.—The South
ern Bell Telephone Company is mak
ing extensive improvements in Its un
derground wire facilities by which It
will be able to care for 1,700 addi
tional subscribers.

pose of aiding the Geological Survey
of the United States government In
making qn examination of the waters
of the country, arrangements have
been made with the volunteer weather
observer at this point to furnish tho
