New York, Aug. 17.—The dbdaration of a dlvblcnd of 5 per cent for the half ycur on L'nloii Pacific stocks and the nunounre- meut that Southern Pacific had liccn placed 5 per cent Imais, were the niton lull ing news which greeted Wall street flf- teen mlmites after the opening today. This, with the sensational price movement which followed, will rank the whole episode ns one of the most remarkable In the history of the stock exchange. The utmost that had Im»cii expected on Fnion Pacific stock up to the close of business yesterday was dividend nt a rate of*7 per cent n year, nnd with some sort of extra distribution. Instead of this, the stock Is placed square ly on n 10 per cent basis, nnd the extraor dinary If not unprecedented fact confront- <*d the financial community this morning that Fnion Pacific shares. If measured by the sice of other high dividend plying Is sues. was selling anywhere from sO to 60 points too low. lu (he nine of Southern Pacific, the possibility of readjustment to the other stocku selling higher and paying smaller returns was hardly less. It was small wonder, therefore, that the whole mnrket should, for the time being, have been struck with consternation as to what effect the news should have. Tin* rest of the market sold off. But the uncertainty lasted only for a brief Interval, nnd then came a rush to buy converging upon the Pennsylvania and “eel shares, but also extending luto other quarters. There was nothing to the market today nt the opening of the stock cxchauge, ex cept Southern Pacific slid * Fnion Pacific. The opening showed a gain on the closing prices of last evening. This morning there continued some profit-taking 111 the leaders. The genera! notion was that l'nlon Pacific ami Southern Pacific were selling high enough on the basis of the most sanguine expectations as to dividends. There was n great deal of dissatisfaction over the fnllnre of the dlrec- tors of the l'nlon Pacific to announce the semi-annual dividend yesterday. There was said to Ihi entirely satisfactory authority for the statement that the dividend on l’nlon Pacific common stock hns been fully decided upon, nnd that poller With re spect to the dividends on Sontlipru Pacific common hns also been agreed on. In some circles It was even claimed that the dividends ou Southern Pacific would la* at the rate of 5 per cent Instead of 4 per cent, ns ha* been commonly reported. The balance of the umrket movements were Ir regular. There was no need of gossip to account for th« trading movements todsy. The facts were enough, snd when the official announcement was made of the declara tions of the Harrlinnn dividends the trad ing In these stocks was more exciting than has ever been noted *>0 the exchange, t broken — stocks nt the rushed to buy for their own ncoitnt. nnd after them came a struggle to cover large lines of shorts.
