much—the American adulation for ev

talk down at one from an angle of

for him. He gets Invited everywhere

ADE ON ENGLISH HUMOR.
George Ade declares the English have
sense of humor, but the humor
must bo something other than the
American brand.
All humor Is local,” said Mr. Ade.
•What Is funny In Chicago isn’t ’funny
In New York. It Is the same the world
>*er—locality has everything to do
1th It.
"The English have a sense of humor,
f course, but It Is very different from
ours. They appreciate Impossible sit
uations, when they are portrayed, very
keenly. A favorite bit of comedy with
them Is the part of the play when the
servant masquerades us the mistress—
It seems so utterly absurd and Impossi
ble to them to k.avo the servant putting
on the airs of the master or mistress
that they laugh very heartily. You
see. It depends entirely on the point of
lew.
’American humor does not appeal to
the English people, because they can’t
appreciate It tight away and don’t care
enough about It to Investigate It. If an
English show is presented on this side
we nil go and make a fuss over It and
>ver the actors. If there is a situation
hleh we do not see at first we sit
down and figure It out until we get It. r
