Reliable advtcea come from Savan nah Wednesday that Colonel Walter W. Some time ago Savannah had tacitly decided to be "hands off" In the race, .ml It was generally understood that J, A. Brannen, a prominent attorney of Statesboro, would be given the long term. Colonel Shepherd did not say any thing, but ijulctly disappeared from his accustomed haunts, and began a Mill hunt. According to the advices coming to Atlanta Wednesday, the Liberty county man Is polling a remarkable vote, with splendid chances of receiving the nom ination for the long term. Voting opened up briskly at the fourth ward polls Wednesday morning, and within the first hour and a half 200 ballots were cast. The city and county voting places were about yards apart, and the Intervening space was filled with heelers of the various candidates. One .energetic partisan had the name of hls favorite on the widest part of a broom In* boxcar let ters, and waved It at each approach ing voter. The first man to cast hls vote in the ward for state and county officers was H. Howto, and for city officials was Hugh D. Carter. No trouble of any kind had been re ported at the polling places up until 2:30 o'clock. Goodwill was conceded to have had the advantage earlier in the day, but at this hour the Joyner men claim that their candidate Is running neck and neck with Goodwin and will carry the ward. Both Dr. B. E. Pearce and M. M. Turner claim to be In the lead for councilman. Hoke $mtth to easily far In the lead fpr the governorship and will probably get three votes to Howell's 1. FIFTH WARD. Rogistretlon, 1,387. City votgs at 2:30 o’clock, 588. State and county votes at 2:30 o'clock 587. Hoke Smith has carried the Fifth ward. W. R. Joyner and Tljomas II. Good win are neck and neck.' The treasurer and councflmanlc races are still uncertain. Through the Fifth the dove of peace has been hovering all day. There has COL. JAME8 M. 8MITH, OF SMITHONfA, Candidate for Governor. been no fighting and only cne “cussing” match within earshot of the noils. This feature and the belief that there will be a record-breaking vote cast are being talked of widely. It has been estimated tfiat betve.'n 1,000 and 1,250 of the possible 1,337 voters registered will visit the polls. The gubernatorial race was settled in the minds c: most of those who kept close to the polls about noon, and since that time the chief topic of conversa tion has been the mayoralty race. Much -monev has been flashed >n both slues. Bets that Joyner would carry the city were refused, and the Joyner men refused money that Good- win would c arry three or more wards. It is believed that Smith will poll three votes to Howell’s one. SIXTH WARD. Registration, 1,648. City vote Qp to 2:30 o’clock. 985. State end county* vote up to 2:30 o'olock, 974. Heavy voting marked the forenoon, but from noon on there was a let up In the stream of voters. Bnflth supporters claim the ward 3 to 1, but Howell men say their man will win out. At this hour indications are thatilloke Smith to leading. Joyner Is apparently leading over Goodwin, though the last named Is get ting ft good vote. State and county vote up to 2:30 o'clock, 343. \Vfst End will go for Clark Howell three to one. It .will go for Culberson three to one. Jt will go for Joyner four to one. The day has passed quietly enough, with*no disturbance and no noise. Aft er a'dull two hours between 9 and 11, voting smoked up a little about noon. Then about 2 o’clock It dropped down to nothing. EIGHTH WARD. Registration, 401. City vote up to 2:30 o'clock, 298. State and county voto up to 2:30 o’clock, 310. The Eighth Is taking It serenely. With the, smallest registration of any ward In the city, the voters go quietly up, cast their ballot and go away to business. Very few workers or hang ers-on were about. At this hour It looks like a practical split between Howell and Smith. Joy ner to leading for mayor, and the vote for oounty treasurer to so divided that no one can tell who is leading. Indications are that almost the en tire registered vote will be polled. IN THE COUNTY. In the county districts the voto was practically all In at 2:15 o’clock, the polls closing at 3. Total registration In the county to 2.546. The total vote, however, will not reach 2,000.
