Jrjttluili: On Tralni FIVE CENTSL JOYNER WINS MAYORALTY GOODWIN WILL CONTEST JOYNER’S ELECTION FOR MAYOR TOM GOODWIN SAID AFTER THE VOTE HAD BEEN AN NOUNCED THAT HE WOULD CONTEST THE ELECTION, AND THAT HE DOES NOT CONCEDE JOYNER’S ELECTION. HE REFUSED TO STATE UPON WHAT GROUNDS HE WOULD CONTEST. With just 255 vote* to the good, dnd in on eyelash finish. Chief W. R. Joyner won his race for the mayoralty of Atlanta. The fourth ward saved him. It was not until a quarter of 9 o'clock Wednesday night that it was R ositively known Joyner had won. Had the fourth ward gone against, him e would have lost. * Thomas H. Goodwin, hia opponent, ran a phenomenal race. Joyner's total vote in eight wards was 4,057.. That of Goodwin 3,802. Here is the vote by wards: Ward— Joyner. Goodwin. Goodwin, candi date for mayor against W. R. Joyner. Wise politicians, however, think that the spurt he has taken In public opin ion !s due rather to unexpected strength than to getting more votes than Joyner. Hoke 8m!th will carry every ward Ip the city, It Is believed, except the Seventh, the Eighth and possibly the Sixth. It Is nip and tuck in the hitter ward, however. The voting was not so fast during the middle of the day as during tho early hours, and the result In a num ber of races will be undecided until the Vote I* counted at tho close of the polls. Hoke Smith shows a strength In the ward which his friends predict will bring him a majority. The county treasurer race Is uncertain. Dr. Bas kin teads for councilman. Curtis and LaHatte seem to be nhoad nr Hllhurn for alderman. Men who are Interested In neither candidate to a great extent predict that Goodwin will carry to ward. 3ECOND WARD. Registration, 2,179. City vote at 2:30 o'clock, 1,127. Stst* and county vot* at 2:30 o'clock, 1,150. At this hour the crowd around the court house corner hod reduced Its en thusiasm to husky yelling for Goodwin and Joyner. Money was freely offered by each side, but was not taken. Every body wanted to bet. but no money wins In evidence. Wearers of Hoke Smith badge* were greatly In the majority and while they were not crying the name of their favorite In the city race, they advanced hi* candidacy. Voting has been brisk ever since the polls opened for business and at this hour a number are still in line. THIRD WARD. Registration, 1,547. City vote up to 2:30 o'clock, 824, State and county vote up to 2:30 o'clock, 871. The only feature out of the ordinary that happened at the third ward polls during the day up to 2:30 o’clock was the appearance of two registered voters who wanted to scratch off the pledge of fealty to the Democratic party. They were told If they dill the vote would not be counted, and they let:. Goodwin is said to he carrying Ids ward, though the vote will be close. Smith Is dearly in the lead for goV* emor.
