DEAD IN VALPARAISO
NOW NUMBER 1,000
Special dable—Copyright.
Valparaiso, Aug. 2.—The city Is calm
today and the people are optimistic.
Careful! estimates place the property
loss at less than $100,000.000-and while
the death list will be awful, the first
reports, it Is now believed, were rntyfr
or less exaggerated, and the best im
pression now is that the number of
dead will be near 1,000 in Valparaiso
and perhaps as many more at other
points in the provinces which were af
fected by the shock.
The authorities are putting all the
able-bodied men to work clearing away
the wreckage and some progress is be
ing made. Martial law still Is rigidly
enforced and short shrift is given to
the crooks found guilty of looting.
There are still 60,000 people depend
ent upon the distribution of food and
while there are rations for them for
several days yet, the authorities will
be glad when new supplies begin to
come In.
President-elect Montt and retiring
President Fresco have been powerful
Influences In getting the situation In
hand. News which comes in from the
surrounding country Indicates that the
heaviest damage was done In the pro
vinces of Valparaiso and Aconcagua.
Business houses are beginning to
open up again and plans are being dis
cussed for the rebuilding of the city.

and within the first hour and a half
200 ba'lo** were cast The city and
coun*: voting places were about 60
yarl« apart, and the intervening space
w°s filled with heelers of the various
candidates. One energetic partisan
had the name of his favorite on the
widest part of a broom in boxcar let
ters, and waved It at each approach
ing voter.
The first man to cast his vote In the
waYd for state and county officers
was H. Lewis, and for city officials
was Hugh D. Carter.
No trouble of any kind had been re
ported at the polling places up until
2:30 o’clock. Goodwin was conceded to
have had the advantage earlier In the
day. but at this hour the Joyner men
claim that their candidate Is running
neck and neck with Goodwin and will
carry the ward. Both Dr. B. E. Pearce
and M. M. Turner claim to be In the
lead for councilman.

feature and the belief that there will be
a record-breaking vote cast are being
talked of widely.
It has been estimated that between
1,000 and 1,250 of the possible 1,387
voters registered will visit the polls.
The gubernatorial rate was settled In
the minds of most of those who kept
close to the polls about noon, and since
that time the chief topic of conversa
tion has been the mayorallty race.
Much monev has been flashed on
both sloes. Bets that Joyner would
carry the city were refused, and the
Joyner men refused money that Good
win would carry three or more wards.

At this hour It looks like a practical
spill between Howell and Smith. Joy
