INTO NEGRO'S BOOT

Columbia. S. C., Aug. 24.—Willi,
Spain, a North, Carllna negro, 21
year, old, waa shot to death by a mob
near St. George, Dorcheeter county,
yesterday afternoon.
The mob took the negro to a nearby
tree, strung him up to a limb and fired
500 bullets Into his body.
This la the third lynching In South
Carolina within ten days. S. L. Connor,
manager of the DorOhester Lumber
Company, was notified by a negro that
he saw another negro attempting to
enter a window of his home. He start
ed for his home, going through the cane
field. He suddenly came upon Spain.
him and breaking several bones In bis
hand. The negro finally freed himself
and ran into a nearby wood. Connor
notified his neighbors and the chase
began. About two hours later Bpaln
was captured not' far distant. He was
brought to St. George and turned over
to Sheriff Ltmehouse, who locked him
up.
Afterwards a posse of forty or fifty
men went to the sheriff and demanded

Ala., was knocked senseless by light
nlng striking the telephone in the home
last night.
The bolt burned ou£ the ’phone,
knocked her down, and her condition

him on the night Mrs. Schafer was
killed, and near the place Indicated,
and It Is the theory of the authorities
that Tanksley mistook Mrs. Schafer
for her and killed her. It Is said
Tanksley, who had a wife and children,
was In trouble over his relations with
Miss Rainey.

chief of staff of the army, who con
ferred yesterday at Sagamore Hill with
President Roosevelt regarding the re
cent trouble between negro troops and
citizens In Texas, says: that the army
post at Brownsville, Texas, would be
temporarily abandoned as soon as ord
ers to that effect, issued by the war
department, could be carried out. The
company of white troops now stationed
there will remain only so long as la
necessary to guard government prop
erty. This property will be removed
In the abandonment of the post.

McNamara, who la a physical giant,
