ZACH ROWAN'S NAME
TERROR/m NEGROES
One Jumped Out of a Win
dow and Other Hid Un
der Bed Clothes.
Mounted Officer Zach Rowan, whose
name 1* spoken in a tone of awe
among the negroes and the lower
classes of whites of Atlanta, had
quite a little experience Thursday
night, in that he saw for himself what
terror his name Inspired.
During the wee sma', hours of Fri
day morn while Zach Rowan was
slumbering peacefully, (It is said how
ever, that Zach never sleeps.) some-
one rapped on his front door and told
him^ to come down In a hurry.
When the officer reached the scene
of the trouble he learned that a negro
had been trying to break Into the home
of W. H. Haney, 133 West Fair. While
he and Haney and a neighbor were
In an alley Investigating, a negro
came down the alley at full tilt. This
flight started a chase which kept up
for more than eight blocks, a crowd
of about fifty men and boys following
and firing at the negro.
In the meantime, Officer Rowan was
Investigating the neighborhood tor
witnesses and on entering a negro
house he found a colored man wrap
ped up In a bundle of bed clothes still
wearing his street clothes. The negro,
whose name was George Holmes, con
fessed to Rowan and was fined $25 and'
costs by Acting Recorder Walter Tay
lor, councilman from the Sixth ward.
Ed Fowler, the negro who was
chased, said that he had been up In a
club room and someone shouted, "here
comes Zach Rowan," so he "Jemped
out and flew."
. Fowler was fined 35 and costs.
VOLUNTEER FRIENDS
Mayor James G. Woodward has Is
sued the following letter of thanks to
the friends who voted for him In his
race for county treasurer:
Atlanta, Ga., August 24, 1906.
To my many friends In the city of
Atlanta And Fulton county who cast
their ballots for me In the recent elec
tion I wish to extend my most sincere
thanks, and especially do I thank them
because their every ballot was volunta
rily cast for me, as I had no literature
of any description and all the workers
In my behalf were volunteers. While
I led my opponents In the city, my ma
jority here was not sufficient to over
come the vote In the county outside of
Atlanta.
Although a great many of my warm
friends did not want to vofe for me
for county treasurer because of the plea
that my services In the past had been
too valuable In city affairs, and be
cause they had a desire to keep me In
a more active political life, yet I at
tribute my defeat more to my Inability
to get out from the mayor's office and
make a more active campaign. On
account of the many duties of my po
sition, which I could not get my consent
to neglect In any way, I was unable
to visit more than one-thtrd of thef
business houses, none of the office
buildings and only eight or ten of the
shops of the city. My having received
such a magnificent vote under such
conditions makes my debt of gratitude
the more binding.
With no unkind feelings to nny of
my friends who were committed to oth
er candidates. I again desire to thank
all of my friends In this city who have
been so kind to me In the past. Hoping
thnt the time and opportunity may pre
sent Itself when I can In a measure re
pay it all, I am.
Very respectfully,
J. Q. WOODWARD.

stated that Mr. Wellman had aban
doned the attempt to reach the north

DIRS. SHEEHAN DIES
AT ELLENWOOD, N, l
News has reached Atlanta of the sud
den death of Mrs. Rlizabeth Sheehan,
of this city, near EUenwood, N. Y.
Mrs. Sheehan spent the early part of
the summer In the east with her
daughter, Caroline, and a short time
ago went with her daughter, Mrs. Jo*. N.
Moody, to the Kerhonkson Sanitarium,
near EUenwood, N. Y., where she died.
Her daughter, Mrs. Claude N. Kress,
of New York, was with her at the time
of her death. She has had heart trou
ble for more than a year, but It wai
not thought to be serious, so that her
sudden death came as a distinct shock
to her many friends.
Mrs. Sheehan in lineally descended
from the famous futnlly of McCarthy-
Mores, who have played such a promi
nent part In the military and political
history of Ireland for a long time.
She was a woman of strong and no
ble character, devoted and loyal, to her
friends and Inherited from her distin
guished ancestry a love for poetry' and
music In Its highest form.
Mrs. Sheehan, who, before her mar
riage to the late Cornelius Sheehan,
was Miss Elizabeth McCarty', was born
In Ireland 66 years ago, and on both
sides Is connected with the best blood
of Ireland nnd England, one of her con
nections being the first English ambas
sador to China, and another the first
Roman Catholic bishop of the Caro-
iinas.
Coming to Atlanta before the war,
she made herself well knbwn to a large
portion of the community by her grace
and charm, and especially by her voice,
which was noted for Its sweetness.
