New York, Aug. 24.—In the cotton market
th*‘ undertone waa ■toady at 3 points lower
to 2 higher. The pit element seemed to be
fairly well eVeued up, und a little hull sup
port brought a quick response, pt&es ad
vancing 4 to 5 points over yesterday’s close.
Liverpool was due to couie unchnnger this
morning, hut instead first prices were 1 to
points down on futures, while spot quota
tions showed a loss of 5 points, making mid
dling 5.20*1. The futures at close were 4
points.
New York was Iregulnr at the opening,
first prices being 3 points lower to 2 points
higher, hut on some unfavorable crop re
port* and light hull #upi>ort prices toon
started upward—December, after selling at
fc.ur>, sold up to 9.1C. .
The advance brought out profit-taking
sales on which a slump of a few poluts t»mk
place, Mitchell mid Dick Bros. offering .the
market down, Hales of the lattet ffere

At mid-day the market was dull with

outbreak of speculation In the face of the
honvy Indicated drain upon the bank po
sition may not have been convincing to the
more cautious element on the stock ex
change, but with the rank and file , who
had grown restless under the dlseusidon
of the many difficulties mid their restrain
ing Influences, the new start upward was
which -could have mode fhe market more
attractive to the outside buyer. But the
speculative position had been Improved
by the extensive realising of the preceding
dnyg. The lendtpg spirits In the trading
had aeeuted some of their paper profits
and fortified for further endeavor. It was
considered that the market had taken the
enorinoii8 load of realising sales with re
markable MinnII ■ concession In prices, nnd
that It had thereby testified to great
breadth and underlying strength. Whether
or not these deuctlons were .corrects
made, they were what shaped profession
al sentiment this morning, nnd when the
up-bidding of the lending stocks was re
sumed it brought a prompt response.

It Is Impossible to get nn.v kind of
news about the northwestern wheat crop.
There were report* of good yield* from
the threshers; also, numerous claims of
poor ones. Rains over part of the north
west have delayed harvesting, nnd If con
tinued are expected to * retard the move
ment of the new crop. In the fncp of
these variegated reports, YBneapolls re
ceived 25 cars of wheat yesterday wiilch
graded No. 1 nml No. 2 northern. The
No. 2 northern sold at 8V6c over Septem
ber and the No. 2 at 2c over.
