The New York market for options opened
slightly higher this morning, due to bet
ter cables than due, first prices for futures
being unchanged when a decline of 4
points was due.
The aalea of spot cotton were decidedly
small, spinners taking only 3.000 at an
advance of 2 points; middling 5.39d.
After the early advance, price changes
covered a small range with tendency to
ward a lower level, with the tone dull,
but level.
Price was apparently trying to boost
prices, and for the first time In three
weeks he today Issued a bulletin of crop
reports, all of which'are unfavorable* It
was stated tho 4 : every time tho market
broke good. he dtunped October.

experience of a market In a time of
nctlvp speculation, the week's opening on
the stock exchange found a Inrgo accu
mulation of outside buying orders and
equally heavy orders to sell from profes
sional speculators, who are looking for
this opportunity to realise profits. The
early trading accordingly displayed an ex
treme Irregularity, In the coarse of which
St. Paul. Atchison and a few other stocks
made new high records, which the Pacifies,
Reading, the Steels and other previous
favorites of the speculation went sha-ply
down. From then on :o twhlny, the mar
ket fluctuated back and coith. There «■»*•

the list showed the desire to sell wss In

on Saturday. The sharp advance of the
previous day caused nervousness among the

New Orleans, Aug. 27.—Cotton had a aort
of artificial steadiness thl* Burning, di.e,
apparently, to the manipulation of New
York hulU, who loaded the IJ%*rpool mar
ket with bullish crop Informrtloii and
buying orders, nnd caused a much bet
ter market there than was expected. The
American markets Improved in sympathy,
although there wen* some seekings after
the truth who wauted to know what price*
were advancing on anyway. The move
ment was something fierce. Galveston alone
receiving 9,725 bales, of. Which 6,424 were
new. The estimate for Houiton tomorrow
was 17.000 r to 18.000 bales, against 12.936
last year and 12.J16 In 1904. Huch large
receipts promise almost a record-breaking
movement ot new cotton for the month of
August. The market may be put np tem
porarily, but It la hard to bellere In * per
manent advance If the movement continues
ct such large projawtlons. The weather

peratures over the cotton belt during the

py cotton plants ought to do well with such
temperatures. As the season grows older,
complaints from the belt will undoubtedly
Increase, ns farmers find cotton on their
hands to market. The complaint they send
in will be welcomed by many onei
and will Increase the interest In the
side and will make the market less of a
one-sided affair. At the momeut, stronj
nnd experienced operators In New YorL

course, Is an argument for the purchase
of cotton. At the same time, legitimate

Chicago, Aug. 27.—There were quiet
closings on the board of trade, with
net changes for the day showing wheat
l-4tf>S-4c lower; corn l-8c higher to
unchanged; oats l-8|P3-8c lower; pro
visions unsteady.
Cash sales were 27,000 bushels wheat
650,000 bushels corn and 110,000 bush
els oats In Chicago; 5 loads wheat, 3
loads corn and 40,000 bushels oats at
the seaboard.
There was a lack of trade in all the
pits. • The bulls In all the pits attempt
ed to force prices upward by bidding
tor the grain without taking much ot
It. William H. Lake’s purchases of
wheat were liberal and James Rankin
was a moderate buyer, too. Business
In all the, pits w*as. quite scattered.
During the day the Armour concern
was a buyer of September wheat, re
lieving the pressure.
