some of the cotton tonght hero for an
advance broke the Liverpool market sharply
this morning, nnd October sold within n
point of the low price of the season. Weak
ness abroad led to general selling nnd tonr
hammering In the local market, nnd It soon
became evident that there was not enough
support to prevent Decemtor running
through 9c to 8.94, which represented a de
cline of 30 (mints from yesterday's high
level. There was the usual ahort covering
on the break, and the market rallied 54i6
points, only to have trading become dull,
nnd, later on, prices slipped off again.

than most had expected, and the rains of

of the details of yesterday's Philadelphia
failure, the stock market was quick to
recognize that It had eutirely exaggerated
the sign! flea nee of the episode. The sus
pension was due neither to stock specu
lation nor to the real estate boom, con
sequently whatever commeut there had
been ;*e*ferdar on the assumption that a
weak spot hnu beeu disclosed In the finan
cial situation was seen today to (hmkcss
no force at nil. A quick recovery was in
order, nnd It began In a remarkable man-

fore the opeufug of our market, American
stocks were up anywhere from a point to

on fhe Canadian Pacific. These advances
were reproduced consistently at the local
opening, Canadian Pacific selling up for

sharp advauces In the minor affiliated
stocks. For a time thereafter there was
