Should Religion Be Taught
in Public Schools?
No on* In the.. d*va would. I pre-
■ume, deny that religious equality la o
prlnrlplc that ahould be .acred In th*
eye. alike of the Individual and the
.tate. Yet. In effect, la It not being
challenged and deviated from by many
peraon. at thla moment?
No one can poealbly he without a
creed or opinion concerning the rela
tion of the Seen with the 1'n.cen, In
other word., cot renting religion, and
that all opinion, m the .ubject. In
cluding thoae of "a* •o.tlcs,” must per
force be dogmatic.
A prominent member of the cabinet,
who ought to be able to think lucidly,
but who on thl* occa.lon seems to have
failed to do 10, grants the foregoing
conrlu.lon., but goea on to affirm that
'It necessarily follow, that echool. aid
ed by the Mate, or by the grant of
public money, mu.t be eecular. Inas
much aa the Mate muet be neutral in
matter, of religion." The lack of
lucid thought arl.e. here from the
ainblguou. uae of the word ''neutral. 1 '
There are two poa.lble way. for the
•tate to be really neutral In the mat
ter: Either (1) to allow that rellgloua
.entlment and opinion are of aupreme
Importance In all teaching, even of the
oaten.lble purely Itecular kind, and
necessarily enter, directly or Indirect
ly, Into all ai^ch teaching, .ave of the
abstract sciences; or (!) to affirm
whether explicit)' or Implicitly that It'
Is not of the slightest consequence If
they be excluded from the secular cur
riculum In elementary .choole.
From the flrst of those two alterna-
res it follow, that the Mate mu.t
consult and abide hv the wUhes of the
parents; from -.ms second, that the
wishes of ths parent, may leglttmately
be Ignored, and religious opinion and
rellgloua sentiment may be treated as a
superfluity, not to say a nuisance.
Are we. as a nation, prepared to
adopt the second courae? Ask HI shop
Potter, of New York, one of the men
open-minded of men, what has been
the effect of, In large measure, adopt
ing It In the United States.
Ask the most serious men In Franco,
even though they themselves may In.
cllne ton-nrd ‘‘agnosticism,” what Is the
result of an analogous course btvlni
been pursued, yet more absolutely In
their country.
Turn to the volumes recently pub
lished by Mr. Shadw-ell on "Industrial
Efficiency” and there read his statli-
tlcs contrasting the appalling number
of Illegitimate births and suicides In
those parts of Germany where rellgloua
sentiment Is more or less extinct with
the paucity of either In those dlstrlcu
where religious sentiment Is Inculcated
and prevnlls.
But need we resort to other countrlea
In order to be admonished of the dan

Materialism Is rampant In the land,'
the pursuit of wealth, luxury and di
version raging among men, and, alas!
women also.
I know of nothing more pathetld
than the noble and setf-aacriflcing ef
forts of those who are striving with all
their might to mitigate these evils;
evils that, by a wiser method of educa
tion might, In large measure, hare
been anticipated and prevented; pre
vented by the early and continuous In
culcation of the worthlessness, nay. o(
the unworthlnees. of the feverish chase
for money, luxury and excitements aa
compared with the cherishing and pur
suit of nobler pleasures. Materialism
—not used In any scientific or philo
sophic sense, but In It* colloquial sig
nification—Is to be confronted and
corrected only by more elevated no
tions concerning what makes Ufa
worth living, and elevated rellgloua
feeling respecting Ilf* and Its Issue*,
unless Inculcated In childhood. Is rare
ly acquired In after years.
Peace-loving, but robust, Patriotism,
Heverence—designated by Shakespeare
"that angel of the world"—Humility,
Urbanity—In a word, all the Pieties
—are surely as Important elements U
education as the knowledge of hoa
many pence go to the pound, and at
long as there are hundreds of thous
ands of persons who believe, rightly or
the reverse, that these "pieties" can
not he duly Inculcated apart from dell-
nltu theological dogma, the state la
bound to allow for that view Just u
much as for the opposite one—In other
words, to treat denominational school!
and denominational teaching as consid
erately and fnlrly as undenominational.
lVhnt did even a pagan poet prey
the gods to give to the youth of Rome?
D. probos mores doclll Juventae

Et decue omne—
briefly. In English, all the pieties.
"The youth of a nation," said the
wisest statesmen of our time, "are the
trustees of posterity," and a youth
destitute of religious sentiment will as
suredly squander, one by one, the most
precious bequssts left us by ths parent
past.
Only one brief word more. History
shows that no atatesman, and no gov
ernment that la truly wise, ever quar
rels with religious feeling. If they db
their Anal fate la certain. They have
to go to Canossa.
