New York, Bept. 11.—There was constdern
lde uncertainty In trade circles over the re
ception of the figures Issued by the agricul
tural department yesterday. Aa la gener
ally known, the decline In cotton from
around 1044c to 9c has thus far failed to
stimulate aggressive baying of a kind that
would chnnge the character of the cotton
market. Many regarded It probable that
some Influence might be exerted by the
present report and new buyers of such
volume would l>e found as would nhsorh the
floating supply and carry on an advance In
the future market. But this morning the
Kouth seemed to l>e soiling rather than
buying, nml this whs a very discouraging
feature for thorn* who looked for a contin
ued rise on short covering aud more general
buying, lu fact, nt times prices ran off
very easily, and the advance seemed to be
more the r«*ult of professional buying than
anything else. As we stated yesterday, on
every advance now the Hoath will tie found
a seller of cotton. While the figures may
not Indicate overproduction. It must not tie
forgotten that there Is now growing some
11,000,000 or 12,000,000 bales or cotton, and
the South has this for sale. The market
Is likely to lie a good scalping affair for
some time to come, with fluctuations above
and below the present level.

to derive a crop of 12,250,000 or 13,000,000

than the same time In the big crop year
nnd the acreage planted la 10 per cent less.
By figuring this out It will be, seen, that
