STOCKS REVIEWED
BY NEW YORK SUN
New York, Sept. 21.—The Sun says: "The
announcement of large additional engage
ments of gold for Import, n decline In
the rates for the use of money on call,
and a belief thnt the time was not far
distant when the secretary of the treas
ury would further Intervene In liehnlf
of the niouey market, all contributed to a
feeling of greater confidence In specula
tive circles In the financial district yes
terday, nnd, ns a result, prices of stocks
advanced. Total transactions In securities
great underlying strength of the
financial situation, and the gains made In
quotations for the lending stocks were. In
almost all cases, considerably greater
than Wednesday's declines. Dealings In
Southern Pacific were the feature of the
day's business, nnd the stock rose nearly
* points to the highest price on record.
ip only explanation of the rise was a ru
mor, or which tiiwcfi has been heard of
late, but of which there hns been noth
ing resembling an official conflrmnt.pn
forthcoming, tuot H Is the Infection of the
Southern Pacific management to ounn tp*

ferred stock nt n price of 115, and then
to re-lss\ie to the stockholders the re
maining 560,000,000 of the preferred stock
that bus been authorised with the clause
omitted In the new share certificates which
now renders possible the retirement of

carried out, rights to subscribe nt par to
this new preferred stock will uaturnlly bo
