Now reuteil to good tenant.. ..$1,750 T S IjEN l l'HE Ft The yellow rays of the little nlgrht lamp and the whiteness of the bed clothes were all that could be seen, at first, In the huge room. When the eyes had accustomed them selves to the seml-obscurlty, one could see on the bed a hollow face of a livid yellow color, anguished and moist eyes, which were fixed anxiously, with all the life that remained In them, on the door of the room, and long, bony hands which plucked the sheets, mov ing about tremulously like wounded tarantulas, and constantly drawing the sheets toward his face, with a mechan ical and Instinctive movement, as if wishing, according to the phrase of a celebrated contemporaneous psycholo gist, to clothe himself beforehand with his shroud. In the doorway appeared the ■houette of the doctor, a tall figure en veloped In a long coat. The eyea. of the sick man glittered; with slow steps the black-clad figure approached the swinging chair, where a youth, still beardless, was yawning with an air of ennui. A few words were exchanged, and the step? were directed toward the bed. The sick man's eyes were dilated, and a voice barely perceptible stam mered : "Z wilt live a year—two years—that's all—doctor!” The physician answered nothing, but the absolute Impasslvenesn of his face was broken by an Involuntary twitch of pity, at which the restless ht^nds were raised, and the emaciated body of the sick man trembled. The physician stood motionless, looking at the doomed man with an air compounded of pity and curiosity, such as even those most accustomed to seo the fatal line crossed have in the pres- ence of the forced travelers. The un fortunate creature read his sentence In that attitude, and with an effort he en deavored to command himself, to heart en himself, while he continued his mon ologue: “Yes—all was finished—It had to happen—but what? What is life? Whom do I leave? How stranae—what shall I miss after death? In vain he convinced himself that he was old, that he had neither son nor brother nor wife; In his heart there was nothing, absolutely nothing, not even memories. Had he loved anything In the world outside of his egotistical tranquility? No, In truth. J. R. MARBURY. Section Director. iat. His Infancy* Some ycara of timid ity. He had no echoea of laughter, of gamea, of blowa; lie could not recall at that moment Infantile erlea—not even the chattering of tvlcked birds that railed him or picked at him. In hla youth, two events—the death of his father, and, almost Immediately nfter, the death of hla mother. All that these two events represented for him were two nights passed by the aids or the corpses, taking care of the wax tapers that burned and spluttered, r rom then on solitary meals, two places less on the common table. Heyond this nothing was changed; the same ser vants, the same house, the same ac tions and the same words. He used to see crowds of young men laughing, going to their ruin perhaps, but a ruin preceded by the clink of glasses and the resounding of mirth. He used to see splendid men and smil ing women, the outspoken proclama tions of twenty, and he would llee, fear, ful of the expense, of the deeds, of leaving his musty old tortoise's shell. Ho had never wished to make a home, for the horror a gain of tho expense and the discussions. The fair little heads and white dresses that cluster around the table and the bed, and animate the house like chattering bunches of Dowers, were for him noth ing but so many mouths, so manv dresses, eo many professors—endless numbers of dollars disappearing with frightful rapidity: To expend a certain amount of mon- to change his housekeeper, were the pains of his life. Ills pleasures were to go to a public garden on a certain day each week, to take the same turns, to hear the same strident noises of the same crowd, to find the same faces and look on at the same Idylls of life people. Once In a while, to ease his con science or, better, with the hope of being amply repaid In another life, he had placed some coins In one of the trembling ilfrly hands held out Implor ingly to the passerby. Now, us he recalled the deeds of his every mo ment, he congratulated himself, and If he had been able to tell It to God him self, to repeat It, to have It set down In a book, and even to require a re ceipt, he would gladly have done It. In his later years he somewhat re pented of not having married, but only because he might have found In the woman a solicitous nurse, one whose care might have prolonged hla days. In order that the doctor might stay longer . B.—Following schedule figure* limed only as toforwatlua ami an not guaranteed; 4:00 A. M.—No. 23. DAILY.
