DAILY COTTON LETTER.
New Orleans, Sept. 25.—The cotton
market continued narrow today. One
of the worst weather maps posted title
eeason failed to move prices much, and
after the openln* the market ranged
over only 4 points, In spite of a storm
warning from'the government to the
effect that a tropical storm In the Gulf
of Mexico was likely to move north
and do some damage In the cotton belt.
Another storm wae also headed to the
cotton belt to the northwest’, but this
did not scare the shorts much either.
Much rain was shown on tho weather
map, especially In Texas, and the fore
cast promised more moisture over a
large portion of the belt. Even the
bears had to acknowledge that the
weather was unfavorable, but this did
not help prices much. Liverpool wae
Inclined to be bullish, and aent over
prlvato dispatches saying that spin
nere were getting uneasy and were
more Inclined to buy. At the same
time futures were bettor than"expected.
This, together with the bad map,
caused a higher opening here, but after
the opening the market fell flat. The
weekly weather reports, as ueual, were
no Influence. Movements were on i
large scale. Ports, 67,162 for today,
and operators were more Inclined to
else up the movement and the demand
for the actual stuff than the weather.
There was nothing very strong about
the spot demand, and, on the whole,
buyers appeared disposed to hold off.
If wet weather continues for a couple
of days longer, as some weather ex
perts claim It will, shorts will undoubt
edly get nervous, as reports of damage
to the open cotton and the Stopping
of picking will roll In great numbers.
It Is a weather market and therefore
an uncertain on*. For the moment the
short side looks rather dangerous, ex
cept to those with long purses.

There wae conelderable talk about an

as well as here, la a general expecta

will occur that always occurs nbout
October 1, as regularly as the autumn

That Is admitted. The question Is, h<sv
much will they IncrenSe and how loni
will they Increase If prices decline
Already there are signs that the South
em planter Is becoming restive under
tho recent decline of 210 a bale nnd
Is disposed to hold back cotton. The
actual crop movement at the present
time Is small, whether because of the
lateness of the season, the holding back
of the crop, or some sluggishness In
the demand, English spinners' opin

cotton is not coming forward as freely
as expected, and there are those who
predict that It will not until prices take

Ing Increase In current demand, surface
speculators have become active oper
ators on the beer side of the account,
and holding the market, therefore,
proved on uneasy task yesterday, not
withstanding the approach of a de
structive storm on the cotton belt coast
and forecasted rains over many sec
tions of the Southern states. Hulls can
coin capital out of wet weather when
the fields are covered with open cot
ton, but bears have ancient custom,
freer offerings from Texas, and a rath,
er positive waiting policy on the part
of spinners which they are able to
bring Into play as an offset to the an
ticipated bullish tenor of the coming
bureau condition report. Consequently
room argument has broadened out
somewhat and extreme low price views
are again being voiced. Good policy,
however, would seem to prompt conser
vative fluctuations until after the bu
reau shall have been disposed of unless
developments In the Interim prove of s
potential character.”—Ware A Leland.
