The light whs warm and no one teemed to have the preliminary decis ion when Chief Joyner arrived. He was met at the train by n deputa tion who told him that the convention was badly split by the four-cornered fight, and that they Intended putting him In nomination to settle the matter. He old them that he was not a can didate and would not make the race, but that he would not decline If elected. Ho the convention went on with its routine, the unofficial fight for votes absorbing all the Interest. The night before the final and elec tion day Edward Croker, the head of the biggest fire department In the world, came to the Atlantan nnd told him that he would withdraw In Joy ner’s favor. "Much obliged.” said the chief, “but I'm not a candidate.” A little while later Bronson made the aame offer. He got the same answer. Then came Canterbery, who said he had had enough of It and was out of the race. When nominations were called some one placed before the convention the name of Chief Humphries, of Pittsburg. He arose immediately and withdrew it. Then Chief Joyner was elected by ac clamation. SOMETHING ABOUT FAMILY OF CITY’S NEXT MAYOR. Chief Joyner has an Interesting fam ily. The phrase Is trite in articles of this sort, but It nevertheless Is very true. His wife Is a charming woman, whose entire attention Is, centered first on her own family and next on the boys of the lire department. Ask one of them who has been III or In trou ble and he will tell you she has been a gtcond mother to him. Mr. and Mrs. Joyner have four sons ■—Richard \V„ 28 years old; W. R., Jr., "Little Cap,” who was 21 this year, and cast his first ballot for his father; Harry. 19. and Ralph. 17. Richard was married about eighteen months ago. He is employed In the local office of the Queen Insurance Company. Now, when you come to writing the personal aide of Chief Joyner there Is one feature that overshodows all oth ers. It Ik the relationship existing be tween him nnd Ids four sons. He Is no mere father to them. He Is much more. He Is their coniiuinlon. their chum, their "pnl.” They regard him as their most interesting playmate, their closest friend. Wherever Chief Joyner goes on pleasure some one, or all four, go with him; when one of them wants to go to the show or else where on pleasure bent, he always goes to get his father to go with him. They are bright, manly boys, as full of personal courage and ns square and honest as their father has always been.
