South has nt last !>een taken seriously by
(tie cotton trade. There wan Immeasurable
excitement at the opening, prices scoring a
uli»rp advance, led by the near months, of
which Europe was n large buyer. Short*

nervousness reached the acute stnge, mid
there was an old-time stampede among this
class of cotton traders, who have been

the yield of cottou was certain to be of
enormous proportions, and that prices could
he forced much lower. They were confident
lu their position and on yesterdav claimed
that damage to cotton by the tropical storm
was exaggerated and prices during the day
frtrelr held their own. the close. In fact,
eh a wing slight declines In some positions.
This morning’s early ndvices from the
Liverpool market showed that the English
spinner. In order to lie on the safe side,
entered the market and bought futures on a
libera! scale, thus preventing n reapoune to
the easiness In the American markets, that
market opening about 2 points up when u
decline of a like amount had been looked
for. Trading whs imee active for the usual
Saturday short session.

marketing.

by uneasiness over storm damage.

The Journal of Commerce says: Trade
for the day was steady, but generally quiet.
The dominating feature In the market Is

delayed In delivery. In many Instances, the
large western buyers who have been 111

they now have orders pending on which

were firm and there Is some apprehension

character as regards Imth the condition of
the plant and the amount of cotton glutted
than has heretofore seemed probable. The

enough, for In the absence of sweeping dis
aster the world will not easily abandon tbe
