ON CHARGE OF THEFT
Charlotte, N. C„ Oct. S.—Charles
Bennett, a salesman from New York,
telegraphed Chief of Police Irwin,
this city, from Savannah, Ga„ to arrest
and detain Catherine Bennett, his wife,
who was In a Pullman car on one of
the Southern’s fast north-bound trains.
The telegram charged her with rob
bery. Mre. Bennett, a handsome young
woman, was arrested here and-carrled
to the police station, where she re
malned all night. She said Bennett
was jealous of her and had kept her
locked In the DoSoto hotel at Savan
nah. She was on her way to New York
to her people.
Bennett came this morning to with
draw the charges, and tonight the cou
ple leave for New York. Bennett said
his wife stole a railroad mileage book
from him.

ing at 5 o'clock Ike Ramaey, one of
Harlem’a prominent cltlzena and mer
chant,, was found In hla atore In an
unconacloua condition. Dra. Phillip*
and Walton were called In and after
an examination pronounced It ptomaine
polann. Mr. Ramsey died at 7 o'clock.
He leaves a wife and a aeven-year-
old daughter.

ing In Mayor Dorsey's court. It was
that of Sanford Bradberry, who tvaa
on trial for "doing nothing." There
was not enough evidence before the

man guilty and he allowad him to go
free, but warned him that he had bet
ter go to work, as It would go hard
with him In the future if he was caught
doing nothing.
Mias Ethel Dawbarry Dead.

Marietta, Ga., Oct. 8.—The death of
Mlaa Ethel Dewberry, the 17-year-old
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Dew
berry, occurred here Saturday after
noon. The funeral service* were held
at the home on Washington avenue
this morning at 10 o'clock, and the in
terment will take plnee at the Citizens'
cemetery this afternoon.
Miss Dewberry had but recently

Eubanks, of Lane Bros.' Co. & Jones,
contractors on the double tracking of
the Southern railway, near that place,
and If he Is found a lynching will be
the probable result. The deed waa
committed without provocation. Ku
banka had gone to the camp to quiet
the negroes, who were raising a dis
turbance, many being under tho Influ
ence of whisky. Gaddy escaped. A
similar tragedy occurred In this vicin
ity recently, when Foreman Beacham
was shot and killed hy a negro, who Is
under sentence to hang this month.

Koed, a chauffeur. McDonough says
his car never touched the man.

ris, secretary of the state board of
health, and other doctors of the board,
who have been conducting an Investi
gation of the so-cnlled slow fever, pe
culiar to this section, during tho past
summer, have finished their studies and
are preparing to return to Atlanta. Dr.
Harris states that aa a result of their
Investigations several points of Interest
to the medical profession have been
discovered.
New Military Company,

Albany, Ga., Oct. 8.—That Albany
will have another military company
and a military band In the near future
now seems assured. An officer high In
military circles In this city Is at the
head of a movement that was Inaugu
rated some time ago to form a new
company here.
Negro Killed by Train.

West Point, Ga., Oct. 8.—Sunday
afternoon when train No. 93 wax leav
ing the car shed here. Marsh Greer, a
negro porter for Hotel Vlrent Langley,
got on to ride a short distance, and In
getting off the train In full speed was
thrown under the wheels and his right
arm and leg cut off and he was other
wise hurt so that he died last night.
The negro was drunk.
