market opened steady, up 6 to 9 point*,
immediately after the opening the Eng-
Uh market eold oft 6 points, which
would have made a very weak feeling
£ere were It not for the weather newe.
Liverpool furnished the American
eotton with another surprise this morn-
i-p m fact. It was a double surprise,
the (lrst being an'advance of 2 1-2 to 4
Mints, "hen It was expected to show
lecllnes of from 6 to 6 points, and
he second a loss of the early advance.
The rise wae apparently the result of
American manipulation—the decline be
ing brought by liquidating rfales. The
close was weak at about 13 points

The opening In New York was dls-
,ppn!nllng. though advance# of from 4
to 10 i in'* were shown, being barely 1
response to the Liverpool early ad
rsnee.
The Initial prices were practically
the highest of the morning session,
prices starting downward Immediately
after the opening, commission houses
and room traders having considerable
cotton for sale. Later on general selling
from the South and Liverpool, together
with hammering by floor operators, the
tone turned weak and prices declined
rapidly, catching some step ordora on
the way down.
Mr. Fries does not understand the
situation, Judging from the following
wire from him today:
“I have been at a loss to understand
the heavy selling In New York with
which the strong Liverpool markets of
the past few days have been met. It
ha* come for the most part through
McFadden's brokers, and from what
hear and aee thla morning, I am of opln
Ion that the bull clique In Liverpool are
holding up that market while liquidat
ing their New York lntereat, which
waa very large, under some under
standing with New York.”
A private wire from New Orleans
says:
''Bearish sentiment Is strong, and the
market will be hammered severely on
anything Ilk* good weather. The sell
ing this morning Is due to the fact that
the weather map la better than ex
pected."
