i - : T' ■ ^ - -- ...—, THE ATLANTA GEORGIAN. PATIRDAY, OCTOBER 27. 1906. =3j HT IS THE TEST OF REAL RELIGION ? Services in Atlanta Churches By SIR EDWARD CONAN DOYLE Dorlnf the discussion of the vital „tIon aa to whether the English Ltlon I* becoming less religious, one — 3t fallacy runs through a great *, n} . of the statements which I have Mid and seen, and that Is the poatta> that any form of ritual, Including ritual of going to a large stone Ulldlng to* * he purpose of communion Eg, the Great Unseen, hns any bear- til upon true religion. The lesson which life has taught me k that It has none. I have known moat admirable people .ho did these practices, and I have i«o»n modt wicked ones. I have Inoivn most admirable people who did do such things and I have known Loat wicked ones. Never yet have 1 Mown a person who was good because l< went to church, or evil because he Jm not. And yet. by n great many iilople. such practices are taken as a Ust whether religion Is waning or in creasing. There Is no relation between "rhe true test of progress In true re- Halon Is: (1) Is there a kinder or iroader view of such subjects, enabling ill men of all creeds to live in amity mil charity? (2) Ate the criminal statistics better? (S) Are the drink returns better, showing that man Is iraulrlng greater animal self-control? rtl Are the Illegitimacy returns better, Mowing the same tiling? (6) is there more reading, more demand for lec tures. more Interest In science, show- lot that the mind Is gaining upon the laic? fit Are the savings banks re- tornlngs better, showing thrift and itlf-denlal? (?) Are the trade returns bitter, showing greater Industry and llllclency? (8) Are there more charita ble Institutions, and does man show more clearly his sense of duty toward the lower animals? Such practical tests as these, which do actually for the most part show progress, are worth more than the ritual observance which may or may not go with a good life. There is an aggressive form of re- iiglon calling Itseir the Dogmatic Faith, which lisa done far more harm to the human race than pestilence or famine. Directly to Its door must be laid not wily all the blothlstalned history or Mo. bammedsnlsm, but all the murderous doings which have In turn disgraced iverv sect of Christianity. In the name of Christ, the Apostle of Pence, this dreadful school of thought, within a-few centuries of His death, brought about adeh quarrels and tuch murders as had never been heard of In pagan days. Over the Homolouslan question, n theological point depending upon a diphthong, It has been reckoned that a hundred thousand people lost their lives, champions and victims of Faith. I only know four cults—the original Buddhist*, the Quaker*, the Unitarian* tnd the Agnostic*—who can, I think, •ay that they have no blood upon their hands. Certainly the Atheists can not, for their excesses In France—In the . Revolution and also In 1870—have been ts bad a* those of the churches. And what has been the root of It •II? Then A and B hate each other with a holy hatred, and there Is the epitome of the blackest chapter of the hUtory of the world. We who are Ilk, (hlpwrecked mariners upon this little raft of a world, moving upon the face of the Infinite ocean, have enough to do to live kindly amonr ourselves, without quarreling bitterly about that which Is beyond the horlson. Perhaps you say that even In these *ery words I myself show want of re- llgiooe charity.
