Charlotte, X. C., Nov. 20.—Special
Agent McLaughlin left today with
three of the English girls who, It is
raid, have been held virtually as pris
oners for several weeks while the In
vestigation of the alleged violation of
ihr a'len contract laws was under way.
The girls, It la said, will be taken to
New York for deportation at' once. One
of them, Mary Hall, said she was sat
isfied with conditions here and did
not kr.ow why she was bd)ng taken
away.
District Attorney Holton and the
tlerk of the Federal court are expected
to meet here tomorrow for further In
vestigation.
1,000 MECHANICS MAY
. BE LAID OFF BY U. S.
Washington, Nov. 20.—According to
a Statement by Captain Leutze, IT. 8.
X., commandant of the Washington
navy yard and superintendent of the
naval gun factory located there, about
1.000 mechanics employed In the gun
factory will likely be furloughed In
definitely about the Drat of next year.
Captain Leutze said that It would
be necessary to lay off the men because
uf lack of appropriations for building
war vessels, and as the woric done In
the fuctory consists mainly of'supply
ing the batteries for warships, there
would be nothing for a large majority
of tho man now employed In the fac
tory to d». Nearly 2,000 men work In
the factory when It Is running to Its
full capacity. Recently about 300 men
have /quit their jobs because they have
been able to obtain employment at
higher wages In private establish
ments throughout the country, princi
pally In the South.

statue and represents Hampton re

which Oeneral Hampton took a promi
nent part.
! The marble was quarried In tho
Vosges mountains, whence the material
for so many of the world's greatest
works of art has been brought. The
granite of the base came from Winns-
■boro. South Carolina.
Thirty years ago this month marked
the turning point In the reconstruction
movement In South Carolina for wrest
ing control from the Radical and Car
pet-Bagger element, and the head of
that movement was Wade Hampton.
Pacific Policy.,
Hls policy throughout was a pacific
one, us he knew everything depended
on curbing the fiery qualities of the
South t'arottnana. It had been decided
by the United States supreme court
that where two factions claimed the
government that the president of the
United States could Intervene only In
case of a conflict. To ovoid that con
flict was Hampton's aim, and the task
was not un easy one.
Things came to a crisis when some
thousands of determined men formed
at the old fair grounds In the northern
suburbs and marched down Main street
under command of Oeneral John D.
Urattqn. They drew up In front of
Democratic headquarters and called for

Hampton had the effect of quelling the
xngty passions of the crowd. They
took him at hls word, dispersed and
went home. Chamberlain, the Repub
lican Incumbent, who also claimed to
oe elected, wished the,Federal authori
ties <o Intervene.

Buildings Were Decorated.
Along with the exercises today all
publlq buildings are decorated and
Hampton's grave In old Trinity Is cov
ered with flowers by loving hands.
There has been three generation! of
Wade Hamptons. The first was Colonel
Wade Hampton, of the Revolutionary
army, who was also one of the wealth
iest planters In South Carolina. The
second wus General Andrew Jackson's
aide In the war of 1812, and carried the
news of the battle of New Orleans to
Washington, riding the same horso all
the way from. New Orleans to Colum
bia, at an uverqge of over seventy miles
a day. '
Th« last Wade Hampton, who Is
honored by South Carolina and her
cltlxens today, was born In 1818, und
died 111 1902. lb' was perhaps the rich
est of all Southern plunters. owning
four thousand kIiivi- as rich as u

cast bis fortunes with l..e state after
the act had been taken.
The monument represents the state
and Its cltlxens acting together, for the
legislature voted 22O.W0 on condition
that the money would be available for
use when 810,000 was raised by private
subscription. This amount was quick
ly made up, and the exercises today are
the result.
