The first was Colonel Wade Hampton, of the Revolutionary army, who was also one of the wealth iest planters In 8outh Carolina. The second was General Andrew Jackson's aide In the war of 1S12. and carried the news of the battle of New Orleans to Washington, riding the same horso all the .way from New Orleans to Colum bia, at an average of over seventy miles a day.
