WELLING'1 ON'HITS TRAIL; BLIND MAN PREFERS COIN TO OPERATION AND SIGHT CAUSE __ Follow iu Quick Succession in Carolina Moun tains. NjmhIhI to The (.Vorglun. Asheville, X. t\, Xov. 27.—Three peo ple were killed and many more narrow ly escaped death during a succession of cloudbursts In Cherokee county last week. Communication was established by wire and mall. According to reports there was be tween 50 and 60 terrific cloudbursts, ••ne quickly following the other, In the mountains, causing raging torrents, whiedt left a path of destruction and desolation. Many bouses were tarried away by the Hood and demolished. Where Is G. W. Wellington, the blind panhandler who was the cause of May or Woodward getting on Ids card-writ ing garments? That Is a question officials of the As sociated Charities would like to “have answered. When he was arraigned In pollc. court Monday afternoon for begging on Atlanta streets his case was con tinued so that he couId avail himself of the offer made by Heeretary J. C. Lo gan, of the Associated Charities, ami have Ids eye operated upon to get back Ids lost sight that he might earn a living. • Me was to have appeared Tuesday morning to go to a specialist, but he didn’t show up. And there Is every evidence that he has left Atlanta, left for other fields where panhandlers have an easy time and where the people are not educated up to this sort of thing. In other words, there Is every evi dence now that Wellington prefers blindness and anywhere from $3 to $15 a day pfoftt from his plaintive tunes ground out of his hand organ to sight and n chance to take that Job he talked abbut which paid $60 a month. Blindness and big money seem more preferable to him than sight anil ordl-^ nary wages. While In Atlanta Wellington mad j his headquarters at the Halvatlon Army, at 72 Marietta street, but he left there Monday afternoon, after he had been arraigned In police court and had his case continued so that he could consult the specialist secured by the dated Charities. Inquiry there Tuesday morning brought out this fact and inmates of the place said he packed up his ofgan Monday afternoon and said it was other parts for his. This In connec tion with the fact that he has not been seen on the streets, and also that he failed to keep bis engagement with Secretary Logan, of the Associated Charities Tuesday morning, leads to the belief that he has hit the trail. And, too, they say at the Salvation Army headquarters that Wellington took an Atlanta man with him—a partner sc to speak, and one who can do the lead ing around and manage the business, "It ain’t so bad,’’ remarked a man the headquarters, .who looked as.if he had hod considerable experience riding rods and brake beams, "when a bo Is shy a peg or has a leary fin.*but one what’s got his lamps out Is all In. I don’t know where Wellington went, but I think he blowed toward the North. He had a letter from his mother a day or two ago that I read for him and It may be that he’s gone to her. He comes from West Virginia and he got sore on Atlanta. He was a nice feller and had money, but I'd rather be broke as a convict and have me lamps burning than have coin -with ’em out.” Secretary Logan Is mill waiting for Wellington and Is only too willing to carry out his part of the bargain and support the blind man until he goes to a hospital and has the operation per formed. He made several attempts |o find Wellington Tuesday morning, but was unsuccessful. It was thought at first that Welling ton Intended going to Macon, as that city was next on his route.
