OIL FIELD IN GEORGIA
PROMISES RIVAL TO OCTOPUS;
BORING BEGINS IN FEW DA YS
Jefferson County Said
to Have Fine
Field. •
Work will begin In a few duys for
the opening of a vaat oil Held In Geor
gia. Oil has been discovered Ih Jef
ferson county, near Louisville, which
experts state is about the pureet ever
found In this county, and a company
which haa an Atlanta man at 111 head,
has besn formed for the purpose of
working the territory.
The company Is known as "The Oeor.
gla. Petroleum Company.” Its officers
are: President, Otto O. Tague, Allan
ta; vice president, William F. Little,
Louisville, Oa.; secretary and treas
urer, L. R. Farmer, Louisville, Qa.; dl
rectors, John R. Phillips, Louisville,
Go.; John F. Gilmore, Brooklyn, N. Y„
and Wright Hunter, Savannah.
The first Indication of the existence
of oil In this state was the finding of
a spring with the crude petroleum
floating on the surface. Some of this
crude nil was secured from the spring
and taken to Dr. Edgar Everhart,
chemist to the geological aurvey of
Georgia, who made nn examination of
II. Dr. Everhart states that thla oil
excels Texas-Corslcuno, Pennsylvania,
Galicia and Baku oils In every particular
Over 90 per cent -of the crude oil Is
keroaene. Dr. Evernart stated that the
»ll when rellhed was "clear, limpid and
had Ihe characteristic odor of kero
sene. If the color can be removed
eaelly from the crude oil by chemical
means, it would furnish a high grade
Illuminating oil without any distilla
tion whatever." It la aald that thla oil
la much purer than tha crude oil from
which John D. Rockefeller has made
hie millions.
Protessor S. W. McCellle, assistant
state geologist, made an examination
of tho geological conditions near the
place where the oil was found. He
■aid:
"All of the essential conditions for
the occurrence of oil In commercial
quantities appear to be present In the
locality where the oil has been found
near lx>ulavHle.”
Mr. Arthur Mandell, a Pennsylvania
oil expert, stated that the Indications
for oil In Georgia are more pronounced
than In many of the fields of the
North.
The company which Is to open tha
oil fields has been organised under the
laws of Arisons and ha. a capitalisa
tion of 500,000 shares, par valuo <1
eaeh. Orders hav. been made for oil-
digging apparatus. Thla Is expected to
arrive at Loulavllla In a very short
lime, when work In opening Georgia's
first oil field will be commenced.
