Austin. Texas, Dec. ".—In answer

Pierce, or the Waters-Piercer Company,
Mr. Bulley says:
Calls Thtm ForQtries.
“I had hoped that you did not wish
to descend from the exalted position
which you hold to engage in a political
warfare against me, nnd believed that
you would afford me an opportunity to
examine papers supposed to be In your
possession, which I had denounced as
forgeries at a time when every effort of
unscrupulous and designing enemies Is
being concentrated to blacken my char
acter and reputation.
“If it be your purpose to use the
power of your nfllclal position In an
effort to destroy me by the use of pa
pers which I know to be forgeries; If
they reflect, what I am Informed
through your questions, the public
prints and otherwise they purport to
reflect, then, as a mnnly mun, you
should meet the Issue squarely nnd no
longer prate about being filled with
shame and sorrow concerning the ex
istence of papers which I denounce to
be spurious, und which you refuse to
let me see.”

Lincoln, Nebr., .Dtc. 7.—Commenting
on President Roosevelt’* message, W. J.
Ilryan says there I* much that i* good
and much that U had in It, but It may
be regarded as the president's most Im
portant state paper. He deplores the
president's so-called war-llke attitude
In his references to the army and navy.
Air. Bryan says:
“■fri
he message contains much that Is
Democratic and for which tho general
public may well thank him. The pres
ident boldly adopts some of the doc
trines which the Democrats have been
advocating, and on the other hand he
announce* some doctrines w hich are so
absurd as to excite amusement If the
suggestion* came from a less promi
nent source.
“In come cases he takes advanced
ground; In some cases he retreats from
ground already taken. He pays a de
served tribute to the progress of the
Japanese nation ami asks for legisla
tion which will enable congress to pro
tect the treaty rights of foreigners.
That there should be such legislation
cannot be denied, but a^grent deal de
pends upon the character of the legis
lation. Bills In regard to this must
be carefully scrutinised to be sure they
do not deny to the various states the
rights to protect themselves and their
people in matters purely local.
“There will be disappointment *t the
war-llke tone of his mensage where he
discusses the army and the navy. He
speaks of the navy ns the surest guar,
antor of peace which the country pos
sesses; It is regrettable that he should
place an agency of brute force over
the nation's sense of justice as a guar
antor of peace."
