CROP GUESSES CAUSE
Trade and Spot Situation to
Remain Unchanged—Raw
Material Firm.
New York, Dec. The cotton market, al
though rather quiet, displayed considerable
steadiness nt the opening this morning, be
ing Influenced by letter cablea thnu ex
pected.
There has apparently been no chaugc In
the cotuui situation so far aa trade condl-
tlona and the demand from spinners for
raw material l» concerned.
The output of the mills Is engaged for
she next six months at good prices, with
Indications of advances In many Instances.
That a greater quantity of goods Is not be
ing told la due to the Inability of the mills,
now running at full time, to ftirulsb goods
In larger quantities.
Last week better prices ruled and sentl
ineut was bullish on the cotton and cotton
goods situation, the close on Saturday l»clng
steady at about the l»est prices of the week,
with the trade expecting a continuance at
least of the steady undertone mid. If any
thing, a tendency toward a higher level un
til the guess by the government, to be is
sued on next Tuesday.
On Monday there waa a sudden reversal
of sentiment as to prices—thnt Is, nn ap
parent concerted movement among opera
tors to depress prices was started, the ori
gin of which could uot l*e traced, though
ihe selling was attributed to Joe Hoadley
and Tbeo Price by Inside brokers. Whether
true or not, there was confident selling
Monday, a sharp decline bedng recorded.
The Influence In favor of the Wall slrcet
clique waa the estlmtae of the New Orleans
Tinea-Democrat, placing the crop at 12,450,-
000 bales, Which, while not overnroductlvc
If the figures were considered, (he actual
slae of tiie crop had the desired effect. In
that It was considered by the trade to menu
t« crop of 13.000,000 hales or more, com pa ring
the guess with previous guesses from that
source.
Prices on lost Saturday were the highest,
the lowest Rising on Thursday, though
Thursday's prices were only 2 to 4 points
below the bottom figures of Tuesday.

DAILY STOCK LETTER,
j New York, Dec. 8.—The market today dls-

! Americans was strong sml a liettcr feeling
' prevails over the financial situation abroad.
I Meantime, apprehension of an unfavorable
j bunk statement today nml the posslldo
| wiping out of the surplus reserve restricts
I support within narrow limits. The bank
stnfcment was more unfavorable thnu ex
pected and rcfiifted In full the loss by
j these Institutions through sub-treasury nnd
; Interior operation*. The surplus reserve is
, now 66,700,009 less than legal reutdrements.

1 strongly Indicate more severe tension In
I money rates, and this may appeal more
, forcibly to the administration than events
, of the current week In New York. We have
l every reason to lielleve consistent action
will follow on the part of this brunch of
