employed In Thornton's big factory
were drowned today while crowing the
ice which covered the Neva.
The Ice broke aa 100 men were in the
middle of the stream, but 00 of them
were able to reach the ahfire. Few of
the bodies have been recovered aa the
rushing waters carried them down un

ON 59 POISONERS
IN CRIMINAL COURT

Montgomery, Ala., Dec. It.—Fifty-
eight prisoners faced Judge \V. H.
Thomas c.f the criminal division of the
city court today to receive sentence.
They were all convicted at the October
term of the city court.
Of this number four were convicted
of murder, one for criminal assault
three for robber}’, eighteen for grant)
larceny and the others for different of
fenses.
Eugene Dowling, a white man
charged with criminally nsHaultlng hl«
16-year-old daughter, was sentenced
to 50 years In the penltentlury.

“It seems hardly worth while to pay

Friendship Long Standing.
“I will say that the friendship be

long standing and of the very closest

“President Roosevelt owes much to
day to Mr. Storer and myself. It was
through me that Mr. Roosevelt was
made assistant secretary of the navy,
and It came about In this way:
“Mr. Storer and I went to Can
ton to pay Mr. and Mra. McKinley a
friendly visit, and also to ask for the
appointment of Mr. Roosevelt to be as
sistant secretary of the navy. I told
Mr. McKinley that It would ho a great
personal favor to me If he would make
Mr. Roosevelt assistant secretary of the
navy. Mr. McKinley said he did not
think It would be a wise appointment
to make, as he thought Mr. Roosevelt
was too much of a fighter.

be remembered that Morgan county se
cured the college «n a bid of $40,100,
against $38,000 from Putnam. The In
ducement from Putnam came from the
county at 1 large and waa for the cen
tral location of the achorl, near thla
place. r
Another bid from Putnam wag made
which ha« not been mentioned In the
newspaper report**. This bid came from
Rockville school district with a view
of having lb? school located within Its
own borders. The district is on the
Oconee river, 14 miles from town, and
the bid submitted was un follows: $32,.
800 In cash; $5,000 In lands; $2,000 In
water power privileges; $2,000 In gran
ite query privileges; $500 In telephone
privileges for 5 years; $200 In brick
yard privileges, nut Icing a total of
$41,500.
This amount represents about $215
for each voter in the district.

The funeral services of Joseph L. An.
drew*, the 5-months.old son of Mr. and
Mrs. W. M. Andrews, who died Monday
morning, were conducted Tuesday
morning at the Church of the Immacu
late Conception. The Interment was
In Oakland cemetery.

RUM MILL DESTROYED
BY REVENUE MEN
An Illicit distillery making rent rum
was captured Sunday by Deputy Col
lector K. J. Hinton on the “town
branch," nine miles from MiUcdgeville,
tin. About four gallons of the straight
article were found In the outfit. 1
South Georgia rum Is claimed to bo
about as effective In producing Intoxi
cation as any whisky In the country.
The revenue officers say that It Is the
equal proof of any corn or rye
spirits distilled. A 6r>-gallon still, cap
and worm were taken in charge by the
officers. The outfit was ready for a
“run,'* hut no moonshiners were In thu
vicinity when the raid was made.
AERONAUT FALLS
AS FOLK LOOK ON
Mudrld, Dec. 11.—Captain Calvo, a
well-known aeronaut, was killed yes
terday while trying to make un eseen-
slon In Barcelona.
Ills balloon struck the telegraph
wires and threw hint out. He gras^d
the wires, where he hung at u height
of a five-story house. . The people
called ttye firemen to rescue him, but
he was unable to hold on. He fell and
received terrible Injuries, which caused
his death.

Dallas. Tex., Dec. 11.—The fight on
Senator Dailey for the United States
senate is growing more bitter and the
opposition Is taking advantage of every
point gained In the contest.
Opponents of the senator are organ
ising and members of the Democratic
committee from Comanche county have
directed that another primary election
be held tot a nominee for the United
States senate, to secure the sentiment
of th* voters. Mr. Ilalley 1ms announced
his willingness to stump the county
against any opponent. In many sec
tions, it 1s said, petitions are being sent
to the state legislature urging that body
not to return Hehator Hatley.

Gadsden, Ala., Dee, ||.—The steamer
Alabama came In front the lower river
country yesterday, bringing 76,000 feat
of cut lumber and a large consignment
of cotton for local dealers. Captain
Peter Wugnon, owner of the fleet of
river steamers plying the Coosa river
between Rome, Ga., and the lower
river, states that the river business Is
better than It has ever been In Its
history.

at the Alabama Great Southern cor

Dayton, Ohio. Dec. It.—Collins Gil
man, brother of Dona Gilman, the glr]
who waa murdered In thla city two
necks ago, and whose body wan found
among the weeds in a common,
arrested today on a charge of being ac
cessory to the murder. The warrant
was .worn out by William Heitxman,
a private detective, who has been work.

an, Mra. 8. C. Gilman, who Is now
confined to a cot In the Miami Valley
hospital, whers, It is said, her recovery
from the shock of her daughter’s death
Is very doubtful. Because of her con
dition, the warrant sworn to by Heltz
man was not served upon her.
An affidavit, charging thut she Is also
Rn accessory, was filed against Kayne
Oilman, a sister of \he dead girl. She
was taken Into custody. The complete
evidence which Heltzman bases Ills
charges Is not known, hut hs Intimates
ho has discovered family wrangles.
Collins Gilman was arrested at Ills
mother’s bedside In the hospital. Sub
mitting to arrest, he declared there was
no foundation for the accusation made
against him.
A committee of live physicians, ap
pointed to hold an autopsy on the re
mains of the murdered girl that were
exhumed Sunday, made their report to
Coroner Ktfne. This autopsy, the sec
ond held, was for the purpose of in
vestlgatlng a rumor that the girl had
died after an operation performed to
shield her name from a scandal. The
report of the physicians stated that
there was not tile least ground for the
gossip.
It Is thought by many that the
charges agalnat members of the family
were premised on the gossip contro
verted by the autopsy. The authorities
do not place reliance In Heitzman’s
charges.

Mystic, a sea going launch, hailing
from Chicago, was towed Into this
port Saturday with her machinery dis
abled. She was en routs from Jackson
ville to the lower east coast and suf
fered the accident while off this city.
She was reported by the government
wireless station, opposite town, and
another launch went to her assistance.
The craft waa shipped overland from
Chicago to Jacksonville.
