Gainesville, Texas, Dec. 37.--Arriving
here yesterday from Han Antonio, Sen
ator Joseph W. Bailey spent a busy day
going over his mall and telegrams. The
senator seemed In good spirits, and
after a rest, Issued the following state
ment :
* "Answering numerous inquiries from
my friends. I state that from letters and
telegrams to me and from signed state
ments In the newspapers by members of
the senate and house since my answer
to Attorney General Davidson’s state
ment. I count positively twenty-three
members of the senate and eighty-three
membera of the house who are pledged
to vote for me. Besides these volunta
ry pledges, I observe from the newspa
pers and hear from reliable friends that
twelve other members have declared
that they will vote for me, as'Instruct
ed by the primaries. This makes a to
tal of 110 on Joint ballot. Several other
members are ranked as doubtful and a
few more, who have not spoken, I am
confident will support me, though they
have not said so in so many words.
I am perfectly satisfied, as I declared
several days ago, that not fifteen votes
will be cast against me."

Rev. Father John E. Gtinn delivered
the first of a series of lectures on the
trouble In France between the church
and state Sunday morning In the Sa
cred Heart church at high mass.
The article written by Father Gunn
for The Georgian. In which the matter
was fully discussed, aroused consider
able Interest In the subject and ns a
result it was to a large congregation
that the gifted and eloquent 'Catholic
scholar spoke Sunday.
Beginning with the making of the
concordat—the treaty between Franco
and the Vatican by Napoleon—Father
Gunn discussed the articles of tills
measure and pointed out the errors In
the reports sent out from France to the
newspapers. He called attention to the
fact that the state had a subsidised
press and that the Vatican had no such
channel of publicity In which to scat
ter its side of the question to the people
of the civilised world. For this reason
he urged hln hearers to-bellow In ac
cepting the reports sent v out from
France, but to wait and hear the other
side.
Father Gunn pointed out five errors
about five essential factors In the mis
understanding. He named these as fol
lows: The concordat, the separation
law, the parish associations feature,
the authority of France and the probu-
ble Issue of It nil.
Then he discussed each feature In
Itself, reciting the history of each, and
went Into every detail In an interesting
manner.
Owing to the breadth of the subject
and the necessity of going Into It In de
tail, the lectures will be continued by
Father Gunn for several Sundays.
IKE PRODIGAL SON,
SUBJECT OF SERMON
I
"The Prodigal Son” was t\ie subject
of a sermon by Dr. Broughton Sunday
night, which was one of the strongest
and most forceful ever heard In Atlan
ta* Dr. Broughton took his text from
Luke xv.. 11-13.
Dr. Broughton stated that what In
hls mind caused so much failure on the
part of young men Is a fnlse conception
of life. This, he said, Is shown, firs:,
by the "crasy disposition on their part
to get away front home and home -in
fluences;" second, "the extravagant
manner In which young men spen.l
what they get;" third, "this fnlse Idea
of life is shown In the exhibition of
their Impudent dependence." „

WHERE MAN WAS ASLEEP.
Spec In I to The tieorglsn.
Spartanburg, S. C., Dec. 17.—The po
lice are looking for an unknown per
son who fired a pistol or rifle shot Into
the home of A. J. Thomas, on Forrest
street, last Friday night. The ball
crushed through the window pane,
smashing the glass and scattering
fragments over Mr. Thomas, who w«
Asleep, his bed being Immediately oppo
site the window through which the
shot was fired.
The shot awakened Mr. Thomas, who
Jumped from hls bed and hurried out
Into the yard and made a careful
search of the premises, but no trace of
a suspicious person was found.

ing i. holidays. Whisky Is being shipped
Into this city by express at the rate oi
350 gallons per day. On last Friday
117 gallons of whisky were handled ai
the express office.
The joa business at the express of

last ten days that the express officials

Washington, Dec. 17.—Congressman
John A. Moon, representing the Third
Tennessee district, will be named as
tho n-nv member of the rivers and bar
bor committee.
Thut this will be the result of the re
cent effort on the part of the Georgia
delegation to secure one of their own
number as successor to the vacancy
on the committee caused by the death
of Congressman Lester la certain.
Minority Leader John Sharp Wil
liams had fixed upon Congressman
Small for the place, but the North
(’arollna congicssman Is not acceptable
to Speaker Cannon, whose dictum is
final !n such matters.
Congressman Moon's appointment Is
dependent upon hls acceptance of the
place. It wns tendered him unofficial v
Inst week, hut he did not* then signify
hls Intentions as regards It. It Is im
probable, however, that he wlil de
cline a committeeship so eagerly sought
by all of the states.
In tho sixtieth congress another va
cancy on this committee will be created
by the retirement of Congressman
John H. Bankhead, of Alabama. The
Democrats have centered on CongxJes-
mnn John L. Burnett, of Alabama, for
this vacancy, and It Is pretty sure that
• will be the limn.
Advocates of opening the Coosa rlv
er to the gulf will rejoice In the proa
pi.ct of getting Congressman Burnett
on the committee, ns hls district lies
along this Important stream, and he Is
an ardent advocate of Coosu river Im
provement.

MRS, BOOTR LECTURES
AT FEDERAL PRISON
Maud Rnlllngton Booth, known over the
world and In the big prisons ns "Mule
Mol here" gave one of her characteristic
tnlks to the 53» prisoners nt the Federal
prison In South Atlanta Hundny morning
shortly sfter 9 O’clock. Only a few visitors
w’ere present from the outside world to
hear this glfte<l speaker.
The words of this Salvation Army worker
made a wonderful luiprctslou upon the
prisoners. Not one reference in her speech
was made to the past that would nwnketi
cmiseleqees. She spoke of the future and
the brtekt thlncs In store that awaited the
coming of her hearers Into the world again.
No effort was made to excite the feeTtngs
of the prisoners nor did the speaker try
to work upon their sympathies. It Is lie-
Herod that the address of Mrs. Booth will
result in much good.
Stic made n thorough Inspection of the
