New York, Dec. 21.—A suspicious
bulge over the hips of a pretty French
woman, who stepped from the White
Star ilner Zealand today, attracted the
uttenrion of Deputy Surveyor Norwood.
He pushed the woman back Into the
ship, saying:
“I am sorry, Madame, but you will
have to be searched.”
A woman Inspector was called, and
with dlinculty persuaded the astonished
passenger to allow her to what she
hud concealed under her skirts. Blush-
Ingly, the French woman pulled out
two long black stockings, one of which
held a huge wooden pipe and the other
5 1-2 pounds of tobacco.
“These ure for my husband, Guil
laume,” she declared.
She said she was Jeanne Roehteltc,
25 years old, und that she had come
here to Join her husband, who Is in
Providence, Canada. A* the law per
mits a passenger to bring six pounds
of tobacco, the woman did not have to
pay duty. She was highly Indignant.

Methodist church on his recent trip to

morning at that church.
