A Roasted Santa Claus

Last Uhrlstina* In the state of Ohio
twelve homes were burned as a result
of Christmas tree fires, and Fire Mar
shal Creamer, of that slate, has sent
out i Roneral warnlnsr. which ought to
b* heeded In every state of the Union.
He says:
Don’t use festoons of tissue paper ir
Mtton batting on a tree. Don't use
any ornaments made of celluloid. Don’t
light a single candle until everything
Is ready for the entrance of the chil
dren. Don’t let them touch the tree.
Don’t permit a draught of air to sway
the free or Its branches while Diuml-
Bited.
Don’t let Uncle Henry shift the posi
tion of his Roosevelt bear to/make It
ihnw better, because he Is likely to
way a candle against something that
pill take fire. Don’t leave an illumi
nated tree unwatched for one moment.
Don’t put cotton under a tree to rnako

take anything off the tree until the

moval of presents begins children ami

much matter how it looks.
In the Interests of Safety and the
beauty of the tree, too. It Is better for
presents to he put under the tree in
stead of on It. There Is now on the
market such a variety of non-lnfintn-
mahle and Inexpensive baubles and ar
tificial evergreens, too, that with candy
bags a tree can be beautifully trimmed
and at a small cost. Most of the pres
ents usually put In a tree disfigure It
by their presence and destroy Its sym
metry by springing the branches out of
position.
The dangeis of Christmas trees in
churches are the same ns those In
homes, with the liability of dent\/and
Injuries from u panic or a roasted
Santa Claus added. In years not
Christmas has passed without at least
one impersonator of Santu Claus being
burned to death by his disguise taking
fire. Tills could be prevented by wash
ing all Ills garments and mask and
other things in string alum water be
fore they are donned for use. The
alum drying in will make them practi
cally fire-proof. What could be sad
der than the marring of this Joyous
and sacred season by Jhe burning of
homes and loved ones through cafe
lessness?

Other people notice your bed breath
where you would not notice It at all.
nauseating to other people to
stand before them, and while you are
talking give them a whiff or two of
your bad breath. It usually comes
from food fermenting on your etomach.
Sometimes you have It In the morning,
—that awful sour, bilious, bad breath.
You can stop thnt at once by awallow-
Ing one or two Stuart Charcoal I.ozen-
ges, the most powerful gae and odor
absorbers ever prepared.
Sometimes your meals will rsveal
themselves In your breath to those who
talk with you. "You’ve had onions," or
"You’ve been eating cabbage,” and all
of a sudden you belch In the face of
your friend. Charcoal Is a wonderful
absorber of odors, as every one knows.
That Is why Stuart’s Charcoal Lozenges
are so quick to stop all gases and odors
of odorous foods, or gas from Indiges
tion.
Don’t use breath perfumes. They
never conceal the odor, and never ab
sorb the gas that causes the odor. Be
sides, the very fact of using them re
veals the reason fdr their use. Stuart’s
Charcoal Lozenges In the first place
slop for good all sour brush and belch
ing of gas, and make your breath pure,
fresh and sweet, Just after you've
eaten. Then no one will turn his face
awav from you when you breathe or
talk; your breath will be pure and
fresh, and besides your food will taste
so much better to you at your next
meal. Just try It.
Charcoal does other wonderful
things, too. It carries away from your
stomach anil Intestines all the Impuri
ties there massed together and which
rauses the bad breath. Charcoal Is a
purifier ns well as an absorber.

No more pathetic acen# has been en.
acted In the Federal court than that
which followed the suspension of the
sentence Friday by Judge Newman
against W. 8. Cromwell, charged with
Illicit distilling. Four months of the
sentence had been served and the pris
oner goes to his home In the mountains
of north Georgia, where a baby boy
Is dying with fever.
The mountaineer Is about 60 years of
age. Without education and book
learning, as simple as a child, he re
ceived the decision of the court with
eyes welling with tears of gratitude
more eloquent than words, A huge
lump in his throat kept him from talk-
Ing.
A more topical mountaineer never
came to Atlanta. Dressed ll
home-made red Jeans, home-made
socks, and a red shirt, that has never
known a shop tag, he presented
unique appearance. His hat was old
and badly worn. His vest was thread
bare. He had no coat or overcoat, and
Friday's chili winds must have made
him uncomfortable.
It developed that he lived 14 miles
north of Dahlonega, right In the heart
of the Blue Ridge. He farmed for a
living, but rheumntlsm caused loss of
time. Eight children had married and
moved away and he was alone, except
for the "of 'Oman and th’ little ’un.”
He had lost his hearing and It warn
with difficulty that he understood. At
the trial his blue eyes wandered from
the lawyers to the court officials and
the Jury. He wondered what they were
saying about him, nnd the old fellow
never knew until a deputy motioned to
him to follow him to the prisoners'
room and the Jail.
- "Revenues Caught Him."
He said the "revenues" had discov
ered a still within about 400 yards of
his home. A trough ran from the still
In the direction of his home, and at the
ehd of the trough they found two
tubs, the purpose of which was not
hard to guess. None of the Illicit dis
tillery was on his hand, and he dis
claimed any knowledge of the owner-
ttilp,
If
Judge Newman had mads him
Christmas present of a reprieve, he
was wondering how much It would
cost him to get out of trouble. What
was causing him more worry was how
to get back to the "or 'oman an’ th*
little ’un." He needed about 60 cents
more to get a ticket.
A kind-hearted man discovered this
and presented him with a crisp dollar,
bill. The old fellow's eyes were so
clouded with tears that he couldn't sea
It. They ran down his cheeks like a
rivulet nnd once more that lump came
Into his throat and he couldn't talk.
The giver and Ibc receiver both felt
better, and the transaction was proof
that ihe spirit of the season Is nbroad
In the land.
