SIR LIPTON'8 PART IN THE
WHEELER-RIVE8 ROMANCE.
When Hallle Ermtnle Rives, the au
thoress, and Post Wheeler, the poet
ure married next Saturday at the
Amerlcun embassy in Toklo, Sir Thom
ns Upton nml his yacht Erin will have
unother completed romance to their
credit, says The New York American.
That tho Rlves-Wheeler match was
helped along by the Irish yachtsman Is
not generally known, but those who
were Sir Thomas' guests on the Erin
when the Shamrock and the Columbia
competed In 1903 remember many In
teresting details of the romance.
Among the guests Invited for Satur
day, Augunt 23, of that year, were Miss
Rives and Mr. Wheeler. Fate, per
haps working In combination, had it
Hint they both should meet the tender
which Sir Thomas sent to Pier A to
convey his guests to the Erin's anchor
age within the Horseshoe at Sandy
Hook.
Mr. Wheeler found Miss Rives on
the pier almost Ip tears at the thought
of missing the race. lie rose to the
occasion and found a yachtsman friend
who took them down the bay. The
Erin was stenmlug toward the starting
line through a choppy sea when she
was hailed by the smaller yacht.
Soon u steam launch tossed alongside
Sir Thomas' yacht. Two passengers
huddled In the stern trying to escape
the flying spray. The transfer was one
of the sensations of the day, and every
one on the Erin praised Miss Rives for
Iter courage, none more' so, however,
than her accidental escort.
Miss Rives had a surprise for Sir
Thomas In the form of a ' lucky" flag.
The ground was white silk and in the
renter a libge shamrock was embroid
ered In green. She herself had made
It, and offered It with ah original poem.
It was this particular day that the
Erin was rammed by the United statee
revenue cutter Gresham, just after the
Shamrock and the Columbia had
rounded the stake boat. The vessels
came together with a crash, and Miss
Rives war knocked off her feet! Mr.
Wheeler was at hand to save her from
a serious fall.
The romance thus begun has never
halted, though the marriage has been
held off some time that Miss Rives
ml-ht flnlsh certain literary work. Now
ehe has joined Mr. Wheeler in Toklo,
where he Is the second secretary of the
American embassy. The American am
