8 THE ATLANTA GEORGIAN ntUnSUAY, DECEMBER 17. M. iurs. eecici c. sail Win. SOCIETY FAREWELL, 8ANTA CLAUS. Tl>* midnight hour Is sped. And distant bells come faintly to my ears; Old Santa Claua Is dead! I wish you “Merry Christmas," but tear Creeps to my smarting eyes; For I have lost a friend of yester Whose *jhvlal disguise Made midnight Joyous: as the love of man Shone from him like a light That burned within his bosom—made of bran— And snow-clad fields of white Seemed weird to me because his reindeer ran. But Santa Claus Is not! If so It be. let's raise to him a stone Upon some sncred spot In name of little children who are grown. And on this pillar white. 'Neath skies as bracing as his bonny laugh. Let carven words Indite The love we bore him In an epitaph. And round the marble base. In tearful mern'ry of our childhood Joys. We. gray-halred babes, shall _ The long-lost fragments of forgotten toys. And where the lllpper shines On wan. white Helds of wintry Ice and snow Shall rise pathetic shrines— The skates and knives and sleds of long ago. Then from that mournful mound That marks his grave we'll, weeping, turn; nor pause To heed the solemn sound Of phantom slt-lgh-bells. Farewell, Santa Claus! —Kdwurd S. Van Zlie In Colllcr'i Weekly.
