rind of nearly a quarter of a century

uary 1, former Sheriff John W. Calls
way's twenty-second successive term
In office expired, and he laid down the
duties of a sheriff to assume larger
and more responsible duties In tha ca
pacity of commissioner of roads and
revenues.
Mr. Callaway la one of the most
unique political figures to be found In
the state. For twenty-six years ha haa
been a public servant of tha county.
For four yeura the deputy of Sheriff
Albea, he decided that the Job suited
him exactly, so he announced his can
didacy for sheriff In opposition lo Mr.
Albea. He was elected, with each
succeeding year (hla story was repeat
ed until It became to look as "The
Big Sheriff" of Wilkes was a perms
nent fixture. He has never been de
feated.

New York Just to cook one of his fa
mous Georgia barbecue dinners for the
editors, and they expressed their ap
provnl of that dinner by defraying his
ex|>enses to and from the metropolis,
entertaining him as their especial guest

Little Flora May had been sent to
Sunday school with her older brothers
and sisters, but after school closed she
became Inst from them. The little tot

able to And the way. She wandered
about the streets for some time, and

waa lost. The child was taken In by
