center of this square and the Judges
were on the south side of this. It
was about 10 o'clock when the mount
ed police, who preceded the marchers,

Philadelphia has some bravely dressed
police. They look like soldiers with
their bright, blue uniforms and the

yellow lining—very soldierly ceps and
splendidly mounted. Then came the
municipal hand, then the chief mar
shal of the parade, and then the mum
mers. First of all was a beautiful

wore a big picture hat on “her" hlond
hair and carried a big fluffy parasol.

The Silver frown flub came.- first.

clowns danced and cake-wulked before
the grand mogul, whose royal robes

to the public heart. There was an

with big 23's standing high above their
heads. There were lovely "ladles’* with

who couldn't have been over six. who
came down the street and. as far as I
could see. waa flourishing his cane and
doing a most extravagant cake-walk.
And during the whole two hours nnd a

stream of paper and confetti fell from

like the tinsel that became real gold
for the two hours and n half, and Ilk©

for the time being, the showers of pa
per looked like showers of silver; and

nnd filled with a horde of romping,
mischievous merry' mummers.
Rut these wag one thing that made
me feel very far frqm home, of nil
the bands that passed me, and there
were forty-three, not one of them
played "Dixie." Can you Imagine a
parade without “Digit?"
The spirit of the carnival was
everywhere, and even In the very
smart down town cafe# where we aft
erwards had our dinner, more thnn one
feather duster shared the honors with
the American Beauty rose.
